PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mac Mclean (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and LeRoy Basil (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). LeRoy Basil will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Mac Mclean!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, LeRoy Basil!
The judges for this bout are Eliza Hachem, Skip Squint and Steve Erwin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Excellent takedown into side control there by Mclean.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Basil is trying to get back to half guard.

Mclean looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Basil tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Mclean wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Mclean is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Basil has escaped the position, nice work there.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Basil manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Basil avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Mclean.
Basil wants to get back to full guard.
Basil works his way to full guard. Good work.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Basil is on top in guard.
Mclean doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Basil tries to stand but Mclean is controlling from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Basil thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Mclean strikes from his own guard.
Mclean tries to strike from the bottom.
Mclean not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Mclean really is a fat lump.

Mclean had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Basil defends it easily.
Basil lands a couple of digs.
Mclean might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Mclean looking for a sweep. Not yet Mclean, not yet.

Mclean has his foot on Basil's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Basil works his way back into a safe position though.
Mclean is breathing heavily.

Basil drops back looking for a leg! Mclean is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Mclean manages to kick Basil off! Basil jumps back into Mclean's guard.
Basil is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Basil wants to control from the top but Mclean keeps moving.

Mclean escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Basil gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Basil wanted to stand there but Mclean had control of the position.
Basil stays in close to Mclean's body and controls the position.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. LeRoy Basil wasn't active enough on the ground.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Basil enables Mclean to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Basil manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Basil looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Basil manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

Mclean is wriggling around trying to escape.

Basil is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Mclean has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Mclean wants to control but Basil is having none of it.
We've been informed that Basil has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Mclean throwing punches from his back but nothing is landing.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but LeRoy Basil will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Mclean closes the distance and clinches.
Mclean makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.
Mclean is working Basil over against the cage.

Basil decides to pull guard.

Basil throws his legs up looking for a submission but Mclean uses it to pass to side control.

Mclean is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Basil knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Basil regains half guard.
Basil is breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Mclean is working for a submission of some sort.

Mclean is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Basil is just riding it out for now. Mclean eventually gives up the hold.

Mclean is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Basil tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Mclean has advanced to mount. Uh oh.
Basil wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back.
Basil is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Basil turns into Mclean and is now in his guard.
Mclean thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

Basil avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
LeRoy Basil has got the better of the ground game so far.

Mclean looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Mclean working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Basil.
Mclean tries to strike from the bottom.
Mclean wants to sweep but no luck.

Basil shoots in and gets a takedown into Mclean's guard.
Basil trying to control but Mclean is working from the bottom.

Basil postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Mclean is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Basil, into his guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Basil is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but LeRoy Basil will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. And we move into the final round!



Mclean scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Basil tries to get to full guard but Mclean has control of the leg.

Mclean is looking for a kimura but Basil is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Mclean to get the leverage.
Basil tries to roll over but Mclean keeps him under control.
Basil is pressing down on Mclean's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Basil takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Basil trying to keep a closed guard but Mclean is proving a slippery customer.
Basil is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Basil manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

Basil is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Mclean is surviving well by controlling Basil's body position as best he can.

Basil with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Mclean wants to control but Basil is having none of it.
Mclean bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Basil has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Mclean can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Basil working for submissions but it's allowed Mclean to get to half guard.

Mclean decides to stand and escape the position.
Basil avoids the head kick by Mclean.

Mclean gets a double leg takedown into Basil's guard.
Basil wants to sweep here but Mclean controlling him for the moment.
LeRoy Basil is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Basil wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Mclean is now in half guard.
Basil is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Mclean jumps into side control!
Basil is trying to buck Mclean off.
Mclean tries to stand but Basil is controlling his head.
Mac Mclean has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Mac Mclean.
I think Basil has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
