PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Lance Brennan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alexander Shlemenko (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Alexander Shlemenko told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Lance Brennan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Alexander Shlemenko!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Cecil Peabody and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Shlemenko closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Brennan quickly recovers to half guard.

Brennan wants to control but Shlemenko passes into side.
Shlemenko gets to mount! Brennan was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Shlemenko throwing strikes here but Brennan is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.
Brennan is working to get back to half guard.
Shlemenko controlling his opponent.
Shlemenko has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Shlemenko has control of Brennan's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Brennan regains control of the situation pretty easily.

Brennan is desperately trying to improve his position but Shlemenko has a good base and remains in mount.

Brennan might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Shlemenko decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.
Shlemenko blocks a head kick by Brennan.
Brennan throws a sloppy head kick and Shlemenko moves out of range easily.

Shlemenko has Brennan up against the cage in a clinch.
Shlemenko is defending well against a takedown attempt.

Shlemenko's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Shlemenko shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Brennan manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Shlemenko gets to his feet - Brennan follows without any prompting.
Brennan shoots for a double leg takedown but Shlemenko sprawls well. He's pushed Brennan's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Brennan tries to clinch up.
A head kick by Shlemenko misses
and Brennan counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Shlemenko is lucky that one didn't land flush.

Shlemenko shoots in and bounces Brennan off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Brennan is breathing heavily.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Brennan working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Shlemenko doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Shlemenko manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Shlemenko stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Brennan swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Shlemenko stands and throws Brennan's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Brennan is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Shlemenko is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Brennan knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Brennan tries to bench press Shlemenko off him but Shlemenko keeps the position.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Brennan prevents Shlemenko from moving into mount.
Shlemenko working the ground and pound but Brennan is defending the strikes.
Shlemenko has knee on belly and moves into mount.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alexander Shlemenko dominated that round.
That's time! Brennan's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Brennan fails with the takedown.
Shlemenko looks for the body kick but Brennan saw that one coming.
Shlemenko goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.

Shlemenko gets a clinch.
Brennan has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Shlemenko after a bit of a struggle.
Shlemenko lands a body punch in the clinch.

Brennan is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Shlemenko can't fight it off and eventually Brennan manages to take the fight to the floor. Shlemenko looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Brennan got a little sloppy there for a moment and Shlemenko has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Brennan has managed to get both his arms back between Shlemenko's legs - danger averted.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Shlemenko pushes Brennan off and scrambles back to his feet.

Shlemenko closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Brennan's guard.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Brennan utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Brennan wants to sweep but no luck.
Brennan is working hard here to advance position.

Brennan is working an open guard so Shlemenko takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Shlemenko changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Brennan looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Shlemenko is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Brennan has escaped the position, nice work there.

Shlemenko stands up.

Shlemenko closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Brennan did well to prevent Shlemenko getting side control.

Shlemenko wants to lay and pray for a moment but Brennan keeps working.

Shlemenko wants to pass to mount but Brennan is defending the position.
Brennan wants to sweep but Shlemenko has passed to side control!
Brennan avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Shlemenko.
Shlemenko is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Brennan's shoulder. That is not cool.
Brennan is trying to control Shlemenko's posture but Shlemenko avoids it.

Shlemenko tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Shlemenko has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Shlemenko throws an elbow but Brennan slips to the side and avoids it well.
Shlemenko misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Shlemenko tries to advance to mount but Brennan denies him.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Brennan tries to get back to half guard but can't.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alexander Shlemenko showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Brennan misses with a straight left.
Brennan digs a good body shot into Shlemenko's ribs.
Shlemenko misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Brennan gets caught napping as Shlemenko dives in and scores a takedown. Brennan manages to retain guard.

Shlemenko pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Brennan back to the cage. Shlemenko follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.
Brennan pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Shlemenko closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Shlemenko throws an elbow but Brennan slips to the side and avoids it well.
The referee asks Shlemenko politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Shlemenko prefers to stall for the moment though.

Shlemenko is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Brennan has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here.

Shlemenko struggling to land strikes to the head as Brennan covers up.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
What can Brennan do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!
Lance Brennan has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Alexander Shlemenko is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Brennan manages to reverse the position and now he's in Shlemenko's guard. Nice work there by Brennan.

Alexander Shlemenko comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Shlemenko has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
