PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Mathew Alexander (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Chard Plankton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Mathew Alexander!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Chard Plankton!
The judges for this bout are Hugh Johnson, Summer Carpenter and Donatello Bradman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Alexander closes this distance looking for a takedown but Plankton circles away.
Plankton shoots in but no luck this time.
Plankton swats away the attempt to clinch by Alexander.
Alexander could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Plankton tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Alexander counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Alexander.
Plankton is trying to push Alexander away but Alexander has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Plankton decides to pull guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Alexander postures up in Plankton's guard and throws a big left but Plankton blocks it.
Alexander trying to control the position from guard on top but Plankton is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Plankton can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Alexander controls the pace.
Plankton keeping busy, throwing shots from the bottom.
Plankton is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

Plankton is trying to control the position from the bottom.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Plankton shoots in for a takedown but Alexander shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Plankton looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Alexander is holding on to half guard well.
Plankton throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Alexander is staying active underneath Plankton, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Chard Plankton was stalling too much, according to the referee.

Plankton closes the distance and clinches.
Plankton is working for takedown but Alexander is calmly controlling the position for now.
Mathew Alexander has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Chard Plankton.
Alexander lands on the inside with an uppercut.
The referee is keeping an eye on Alexander - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.

Alexander jumps into guard, dragging Plankton to the mat.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Alexander wants to stand but Plankton is controlling the position.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Chard Plankton hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Plankton tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Alexander paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Plankton lands a high kick!


It looks like Mathew Alexander has been cut.
Plankton blocks a head kick by Alexander.

Alexander gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Plankton escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Plankton shoots in but no luck this time.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Alexander pushes Plankton up against the cage in a clinch.
Alexander tries to throw a body punch but Plankton avoids it by throwing Alexander back against the cage.

Plankton jumps into guard, dragging Alexander to the mat.
Alexander slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Plankton controls Alexander momentarily but Alexander frees himself.
Alexander loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Alexander in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Alexander might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Alexander won't allow Plankton to sweep him here.
Plankton is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Alexander looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Plankton misses with an attempted mid kick.
Plankton connects with a leg kick. Alexander looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.

Alexander throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Plankton was covering up waiting for the punch and Alexander finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Plankton looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Alexander passes into side control.
Alexander sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Plankton is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.

Plankton is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Alexander is controlling him well.

You can see the frustration on Plankton's face as Alexander controls the position.

Alexander working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Plankton is looking for a sweep.
Plankton is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Alexander is one step ahead and moves to full mount!

Alexander looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.

Alexander looking to secure an arm triangle but Plankton defends it well.

Plankton looking to escape from mount but he's given up his back!
Alexander gets his hands free as Plankton looks to control.
Plankton is trying to avoid being dragged into an even worse position than he's already in but Alexander is staying active.
Alexander has the hooks in. Plankton is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.
Plankton trying to control the action but Alexander just sinks the hooks in.

Plankton might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Alexander haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Alexander has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Plankton has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Plankton is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Alexander gets his way!

Plankton trying to control the hands but Alexander won't let him.

Alexander keeps control of the position as Plankton tries to break free.
Alexander doesn't have the hooks in and Plankton manages to turn into his guard.
Plankton trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Alexander escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Plankton gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Mathew Alexander will probably get the nod.

Alexander stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Alexander wants it to stay on the feet.

Alexander gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Plankton with an attempt at a knee that misses.
Alexander is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Plankton to keep the fight standing.

Plankton has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

Plankton ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Plankton no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Alexander stands up and waves to Plankton to follow him.
Alexander shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Plankton as he avoids it easily.

Plankton tries to close the distance and clinch up but Alexander swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Alexander pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Mathew Alexander is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Alexander shoots in for a double leg but Plankton sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Alexander throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Plankton's waist but Plankton gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Alexander off to one side.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Plankton fails with an attempt to clinch.

Plankton fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Alexander, pushing him back against the cage.
Alexander stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.
Plankton has had enough of the clinch but Alexander keeps him there for the moment.

Plankton drags the fight down to the ground.
Chard Plankton has got the better of the ground game so far.
Alexander won't allow Plankton to get back to his feet.

Alexander avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Plankton not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Alexander gets to his feet. Plankton looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Plankton gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Alexander.

Alexander throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Plankton shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Alexander sprawls well. Alexander wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Plankton gets slowly back to his feet.
Plankton tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Alexander swivels and escapes.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Alexander closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Plankton drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Alexander gets the underhooks and prevents it.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Mathew Alexander.
I think Alexander has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
