PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Matthew Godbolt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Marcello Cobretti (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Godbolt kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Trenches by Pop Evil. Cobretti is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by White Zombie - Black Sunshine . Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 8 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Matthew Godbolt!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Marcello Cobretti!
The judges for this bout are Alec Ball, William Peck and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Godbolt avoids the body shot from Cobretti.
Godbolt looks to throw the jab but Cobretti is out of range.
Jab, jab by Godbolt - just one landing.
Godbolt works Cobretti's body with a nice hook.
Godbolt throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Godbolt has a takedown stuffed.
Cobretti throws a half hearted mid kick.
Godbolt connects with a crisp jab.

and Cobretti holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Cobretti is pressed up against the cage. Godbolt has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Cobretti down to the mat. Cobretti avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

Godbolt ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
Cobretti throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
We've been told by Godbolt's head coaches at Den of Tears (22 coaches, $350 fee) that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Cobretti throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.
Godbolt tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Cobretti was well out of range. Poor timing from Godbolt.

Godbolt gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Cobretti to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Cobretti trying to control the position from guard on top but Godbolt is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Cobretti might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Godbolt haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Cobretti seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Godbolt does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Cobretti thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Godbolt is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Cobretti is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Godbolt has managed to free his arm - good work.

Cobretti looking to control the position here, rather than advance.

Cobretti wants to control from the top but Godbolt keeps moving.

Cobretti stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Godbolt swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Godbolt controls Cobretti momentarily but Cobretti frees himself.

Godbolt is trying to control the position but Cobretti postures up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Godbolt misses with a body shot.
Godbolt throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Godbolt misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Matthew Godbolt seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Cobretti on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.
Cobretti fails in his attempt to clinch.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
No luck for Godbolt with that takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Matthew Godbolt. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Cobretti tries to land a front kick but Godbolt steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Matthew Godbolt will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Cobretti throws a low kick but Godbolt avoids it.
Cobretti fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Godbolt has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Cobretti lands with a kick to the temple. Godbolt shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"


It looks like Matthew Godbolt has been cut.

Godbolt throws a body punch but Cobretti moves out of range.
Godbolt stuffs the takedown.
Godbolt misses with a jab, cross combination.
Godbolt connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
Cobretti slips a jab and a cross from Godbolt.
Godbolt bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Godbolt uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Cobretti.
Godbolt throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Cobretti.
Cobretti throws a head kick that Godbolt semi-blocks.
Marcello Cobretti seems to be getting the better of the standup.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Godbolt connects with a nice short shot to Cobretti's temple.

Cobretti working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Godbolt doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Godbolt manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Matthew Godbolt.
I think Godbolt has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
