Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Ivan Rodriguez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jake Gurel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). There are an array of beautiful celebrities at ringside tonight! I wonder if any of them paid for their tickets.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Ivan Rodriguez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jake Gurel!
The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Paul Gruel and Roger Salmon.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gurel checks a leg kick.
Nice sprawl there from Rodriguez as Gurel shoots in.
Rodriguez tries to clinch
and Gurel counters with a left and a right that stings Rodriguez.

Gurel has Rodriguez up against the cage in a clinch.
Rodriguez doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Gurel wants a takedown but no success here.
A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.
Gurel prevents a body shot from Rodriguez.

Gurel turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Gurel manages to end up in side control.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Gurel happy to just control the position for now.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Gurel wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Rodriguez, who protects the arm well.
Rodriguez's coaches at Hilo Training Center have been working on his defensive grappling in preparation for this fight so let's see if he can get out of this tricky position.

Gurel throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
An elbow from Gurel crashes against the mat.
Rodriguez is pushing Gurel's head away, looking to escape. Gurel manages to hold on to the position though.

Gurel stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Rodriguez tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Gurel counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Gurel misses with a takedown attempt - Rodriguez sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Ivan Rodriguez has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jake Gurel.
Gurel throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.

and Gurel counters with a two punch combo.

Gurel throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Rodriguez was covering up waiting for the punch and Gurel finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Gurel tries to free his leg and advance position but Rodriguez is retaining full guard.
Gurel won't allow Rodriguez to get back to his feet.

Rodriguez has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Gurel is proving hard to escape from.

Rodriguez tries to land a front kick but Gurel steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.

Gurel shoots in and bounces Rodriguez off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

and Gurel makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.
Rodriguez misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Gurel shoots in for a double leg but Rodriguez sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Rodriguez throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.

Gurel changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Rodriguez looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Rodriguez wants to get back to his feet but Gurel drags him back down.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jake Gurel showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Rodriguez fails with an attempt to clinch.

Gurel shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Rodriguez's guard.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Jake Gurel hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
