Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Felipe Melo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 20 - 9 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Kent Phillips!
The judges for this bout are David Schapiro, Joseph Jones and Steve Montenegro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The fighters circle momentarily. Phillips darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.


It looks like Felipe Melo has been cut.
Melo misses with the body kick
and Phillips counters with an outside leg kick.
Melo stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Melo wants it to stay on the feet.
We've been informed that Phillips has been sparring a lot of Muay Thai in the buildup to this fight so let's see if that has an impact on the result.
Phillips tries to close the distance and clinch but Melo swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Phillips shoots for a takedown but Melo saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Phillips connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Phillips takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Phillips uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Melo.
A clash of legs there as Phillips blocks the low kick.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Phillips.
Felipe Melo has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Kent Phillips.
Melo throws a leg kick which misses Phillips's front leg but catches the back leg as Phillips tries to avoid it.
Melo plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!


It looks like Kent Phillips has been cut.
Melo looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.
Phillips fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Phillips rushes Melo and presses him up against the cage.
A quick uppercut on the inside from Phillips.
I was talking to Melo's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
Melo has a couple of punches blocked by Phillips.
Phillips leaning his opponent against the cage.
Melo is trying to force a seperation but Phillips has the dominant position.
Melo misses with a punch on the inside.
Still in the clinch, Melo scores with a nice short uppercut.

Melo breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Phillips misses with a takedown attempt
and Melo counters with a solid body kick.
Phillips tries to check a leg kick but that clearly hurt him.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Phillips stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Melo.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Melo pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Melo misses with a leg kick.
Phillips tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Melo swivels and escapes.
Melo pushes Phillips away with a front kick.
Phillips looks winded!
Melo with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Melo throws a sloppy head kick and Phillips moves out of range easily.
Melo lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Melo.
Phillips walks straight into a right hand from Melo - that's dropped him! Melo jumps into mount and starts pounding away - can he finish?! More strikes go undefended and the referee has to dive in to save Phillips from any more punishment! Phillips complains about the stoppage but falls over as he tries to stand back up, so it was clearly a good stoppage.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:40 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punches). Felipe Melo!
An intense looking Felipe Melo took to the microphone post fight and gave a little speech: 'Shit , that was a tough fight.'.
The defeated Kent Phillips had this to say: 'I'll be back better and stronger.'.
