Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jose Aldo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Mateus Mettler!
The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Felipe Paraventi and Seu Braga.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mettler misses with a takedown attempt

and Aldo counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Mettler looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!
Mettler tries to pull guard but Aldo won't allow it.

Aldo has Mettler pressed up against the ropes. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Aldo pulls back from the ropes and twists to the side, sending Mettler tumbling to the mat - Aldo dives into Mettler's guard.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Aldo has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Mettler is proving hard to escape from.

Aldo gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Aldo keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Jose Aldo has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mateus Mettler.

Aldo closes the distance and pushes Mettler back into the ropes.

Aldo has clasped his hands together around Mettler's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Aldo tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.
A lull in the action here.

Aldo working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.

Aldo wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Mettler, who protects the arm well.

Aldo decides to take the fight back to the feet.

Aldo gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Aldo keeps control of Mettler as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Aldo wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Aldo's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Mettler misses with a takedown
and Aldo counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
Aldo throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.

Aldo gets a clinch.
Aldo is trying to break the clinch but Mettler has him pressed against the ropes.

Aldo breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Aldo closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Mettler quickly recovers to half guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Aldo wants to free his trapped foot but Mettler is holding on for dear life with his legs.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Jose Aldo wasn't doing enough on the ground.

Aldo shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Mettler manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Aldo stays in close to Mettler's body and controls the position.
Mettler wants to sweep but no luck.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Mettler being controlled here, momentarily.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Aldo slips nicely into half guard.
Aldo really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Aldo content to control rather than advance.
Aldo tries to stand and escape but Mettler is controlling the position.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Aldo is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Mettler has managed to free his arm - good work.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Aldo wants to stand but Mettler has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Aldo shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Aldo sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Mettler wants to sweep here but Aldo controlling him for the moment.
Aldo is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
We've been informed that Mettler has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Jose Aldo.

Mettler is breathing heavily.

Mettler working a defensive guard but Aldo passes into half guard.
Aldo seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Mettler is trying to escape back to his feet but Aldo uses the scramble to pass into side control.

Aldo tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Aldo has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Aldo in side control, working for a kimura. He's got hold of an arm and he's torquing it... Mettler is tapping! That's the end of the fight!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:59 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Jose Aldo!
A relieved looking Jose Aldo thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
