PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Howard Beale (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joshua Branham (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Beale's entrance music is Mad As Hell. A fine choice. The crowd seem to be enjoying Branham's choice of entrance music: You Can Hate Me Now. Joshua Branham struggled to make weight for this fight. He only made it down to 146.3lbs at the first attempt and had to take the additional two hours to make the official bout weight. Let's see how much it's taken out of him. The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Howard Beale!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Joshua Branham!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Wesley Smith and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Branham bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Beale sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Beale is trying to stand back up but Branham is controlling him
Beale manages to get to full guard.
Beale might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Branham prevents Beale from getting back to his feet.

Beale escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Branham gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Branham stands up and waves to Beale to follow him.

Branham closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Beale to the mat! Beale manages to get full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Beale wants to sweep but no luck.
Beale striking from his own guard.
Branham must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Branham wants to pass the guard but Beale is keeping the position.
Branham wants to control from the top but Beale keeps moving.
Branham postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Branham working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.
Beale controlling the position.
Beale tries to land a sweep but no joy.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Branham wants to clinch.
Branham throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Beale scores a takedown into full mount!
Beale tries to control but Branham wriggling away.
Branham looks gassed!
Branham working to try and regain half guard.
Beale lands with some strikes.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Beale is landing with some decent strikes but Branham is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Beale landing strikes from the mount and Branham is in trouble!
Beale controlling from the full mount.
Branham is arching his back trying to strike from the bottom but Beale turns him over and now has his back.
Branham trying to get back to his feet but Beale is in full control for now.
Beale trying to control.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Beale is really struggling to control Branham but he's trying to hold on to the position.
Beale lands punches and elbows.

Beale working from the back looking to end the fight with a rear naked choke. Branham is doing well to defend. Beale seems to have got his hand under the chin though and he's sunk the choke in! Branham is forced to tap and this one is over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:57 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Howard Beale!
