PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Oliver Ott (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kenji Nakai (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Oliver Ott!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Kenji Nakai!
The judges for this bout are Sosuke Kotani, Tatsuya Matsuyama and Shigeki Sano.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nakai displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Ott throws out the jab.
Ott wants to clinch

and Nakai counters with a nice double leg into side control. Ott won't be happy with that.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Nakai stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Ott closes the distance looking to clinch

and Nakai counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Nakai gets underhooks to prevent Ott's takedown attempt.

Ott tries to score a body lock takedown but Nakai shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Ott got a little sloppy there for a moment and Nakai has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Ott has managed to get both his arms back between Nakai's legs - danger averted.

Nakai is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Ott postures up in Nakai's guard and throws a big left but Nakai blocks it.

Nakai is looking for a triangle but Ott pushes his legs off easily.
Ott postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Ott might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Nakai wants to sweep but no luck.
Ott with a flurry of punches that miss.

Ott drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Nakai dives on top into guard.
Ott can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Nakai controls the pace.

The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Nakai darts in and clinches Ott up against the cage.

Nakai manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Ott in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Ott drops back, looking for a kneebar! Nakai looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Nakai looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Nakai!

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Nakai has clasped his hands together around Ott's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Nakai is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Ott will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

Nakai wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Ott, who protects the arm well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Nakai remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
Ott is not content to let Nakai control the position.
Kenji Nakai has got the better of the ground game so far.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Kenji Nakai hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Ott closes the distance but Nakai moves to the side

and Nakai counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Nakai has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Ott is trying to keep an underhook but Nakai manages to get the takedown into half guard.

Nakai seems to be working for a kimura but Ott defends the submission attempt.

Nakai not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
It looks like Nakai is going to stand back up.

Nakai decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.

Ott is looking to clinch.
Ott moves to clinch but Nakai breaks away

and Nakai counters by clinching up.
Nakai wants a takedown.

Nakai has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Nakai changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Ott fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Kenji Nakai showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

Nakai jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Ott walks away with a smile on his face. Nakai gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

and Nakai counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Ott's guard now.
Nakai stays in close to Ott's body and controls the position.
Ott wants to improve his position but instead Nakai has moved into half guard.
Nakai is just content to waste time from the top position. Ott takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

Ott keeping moving, preventing Nakai from controlling successfully.
Ott utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Ott is trying to keep Nakai in close.
Nakai trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Kenji Nakai.
Ott wants to clinch up but Nakai keeps it at a distance.
Ott shoots for a takedown but Nakai saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Ott is staying active underneath Nakai, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Kenji Nakai.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Nakai wants the takedown. Ott is fighting it off but Nakai persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Ott's guard against the cage.
Nakai must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Nakai decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Ott, up you get!

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Kenji Nakai comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Nakai winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
