PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Byron Skiddles (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Marvin Zerkle (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Byron Skiddles!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Marvin Zerkle!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Chris Saunders and Paul Gruel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Zerkle shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Skiddles as he avoids it easily.
Skiddles throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Skiddles lands with a hook. Zerkle tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.

Zerkle shoots in and gets a takedown into Skiddles's guard.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

Skiddles is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Zerkle got a little sloppy there for a moment and Skiddles has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Zerkle has managed to get both his arms back between Skiddles's legs - danger averted.

Zerkle decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Zerkle clinches up with Skiddles and pushes him back against the cage.
Skiddles swings wildly with an uppercut but Zerkle uses good head movement to avoid it.
Skiddles takes an elbow to the temple.
This has been an exciting period of action!
With the fighters clinched against the cage, Skiddles creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.
Skiddles is trying to push Zerkle away but Zerkle has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Zerkle lands an elbow just above Skiddles 's eye.


It looks like Byron Skiddles has been cut.
Zerkle pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage.
Skiddles is trying to break the clinch but Zerkle is controlling him.

Skiddles's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Zerkle throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Skiddles was covering up waiting for the punch and Zerkle finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Zerkle wants to control from the top but Skiddles keeps moving.
Skiddles can't keep his opponent in guard - Zerkle advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Zerkle looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Zerkle is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Skiddles looking for submissions off his back.
Skiddles has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage.
Zerkle thows a huge punch but Skiddles dodges it nicely.

Skiddles is defending against the submission attempts here by Zerkle.
Zerkle works his foot free and advances to mount.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Zerkle scoring with strikes but Skiddles is staying in there.
Skiddles is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Zerkle wants to control the pace but Skiddles is squirming around nicely.
Skiddles tries to hold on but Zerkle postures up.
Zerkle trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Skiddles is looking to get to half guard.
Skiddles regains half guard.

Zerkle is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Skiddles defends it well.
Skiddles trying to control but Zerkle postures up.
Zerkle is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Zerkle is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Zerkle working his ground and pound in the gym. So far it seems to be working well.
Skiddles is not content to let Zerkle control the position.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Zerkle is looking to stall here but Skiddles recovers full guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Skiddles is trying to keep Zerkle in close.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Zerkle uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Skiddles.
Skiddles swats away the attempt to clinch by Zerkle.

Skiddles ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
Zerkle is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Marvin Zerkle seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Zerkle gets control of Skiddles's arms and successfully pulls guard. Zerkle will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Skiddles in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Zerkle kicks Skiddles off and gets to his feet.
Zerkle tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Skiddles swivels and escapes.
Zerkle tries to clinch up.

Skiddles feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Zerkles jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!

Skiddles is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Zerkle is aware though and is defending well.
Zerkle wants to pass the guard but Skiddles is keeping the position.
Zerkle is working Skiddles over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Zerkle is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Skiddles knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Zerkle wants to lay and pray for a moment but Skiddles keeps working.
Skiddles wants to control but Zerkle postures up.
Skiddles tries to improve position but can't.

Zerkle decides to stand back up. Zerkle steps back and let's Skiddles get back to his feet.
Skiddles misses with an attempted mid kick.
Zerkle shoots for a double leg takedown but Skiddles sprawls well. He's pushed Zerkle's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Byron Skiddles has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Marvin Zerkle.
Zerkle tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Zerkle is looking to clinch but Skiddles is avoiding it.
Zerkle darts in looking for a takedown but Skiddles gets double underhooks and turns Zerkle into the cage.

Skiddles escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Zerkle shoots in looking for a takedown. Skiddles tries to sprawl out of it but Zerkle keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Skiddles manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Skiddles scores with a crisp jab that stopped Zerkle in his tracks.
Zerkle tries for a takedown but Skiddles sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

A close second round but Marvin Zerkle will probably get the nod - 10:9.

That's time! Skiddles's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Zerkle takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.

Zerkle jumps guard but Skiddles stands there with Zerkle around his waist. Zerkle gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Zerkle takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Skiddles is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Zerkle moves into full mount! Skiddles won't be happy about that!

Zerkle is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Skiddles can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

I've got Zerkle winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
