PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Dean Ruiz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Cheese Steak (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Dean Ruiz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Cheese Steak!
The judges for this bout are Eddie Farnsworth, Franklyn Lucas and Steve Montenegro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Some wild striking there from Steak.
Ruiz moves to clinch but Steak breaks away

and Steak counters with a shoot takedown. Ruiz fights it but they end up in guard.
Ruiz keeping full guard, as Steak tries to pass.
Steak wants to stand but Ruiz has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Ruiz keeping moving, preventing Steak from controlling successfully.
Steak advances to half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Steak is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Steak looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
It looks like Steak is going to stand back up.
Steak trying to control the pace.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Cheese Steak was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Ruiz darts in trying to clinch

and Steak counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Ruiz's guard now.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Steak prevents Ruiz from getting back to his feet.
Ruiz will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Steak trying to control but Ruiz is working from the bottom.
Steak wants to pass the guard but Ruiz is keeping the position.

Cheese Steak has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Steak throws a hook to the side of Ruiz's head but Ruiz sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Steak throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Steak dives in and scores a takedown into Ruiz's guard.
Ruiz wants to sweep but no luck.
Ruiz lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Steak!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Ruiz is trying to stand up but he's being controlled by his opponent.
Steak is working to get back to half guard.
Ruiz with the ground and pound from mount.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Ruiz is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Steak to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Steak shrugs it off.
Steak tries to lock up and control but Ruiz gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Ruiz moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Steak has worked his arm free - good work by Steak!
Ruiz lands a decent elbow from side control.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Ruiz lands a nice forearm strike.
Steak manages to work his way to half guard, despite Ruiz's best efforts.
Steak makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Steak.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Ruiz throws a strike but Steak rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Steak controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Cheese Steak dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Steak shoots in looking for a takedown. Ruiz tries to sprawl out of it but Steak keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Ruiz manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Ruiz tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Steak defends well and Ruiz ends up having to push Steak into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Steak manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Steak looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Ruiz throwing strikes but missing.
Steak looking for a sweep. Not yet Steak, not yet.
Ruiz in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Ruiz really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Ruiz is fighting to break Steak's control of his arms but Steak is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Steak is trying to control the position but Ruiz postures up.
Steak is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Ruiz is controlling him.
Steak avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Steak has momentary wrist control but Ruiz slips an elbow through the middle.
Ruiz has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Ruiz accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Ruiz throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Steak works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Ruiz won't allow Steak to get back to his feet.
Ruiz postures up in Steak's guard and throws a big left but Steak blocks it.

Steak not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Steak working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Ruiz.
Steak avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Cheese Steak has got the better of the ground game so far.

Ruiz is looking to stand up but Steak won't let him.

Steak is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Ruiz defends well.
Steak is breathing heavily.
Ruiz throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Steak is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Ruiz wants to get back to his feet.
Steak stalling.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Cheese Steak.

Ruiz closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Ruiz lands in his opponent's guard.
Ruiz prevents Steak from getting back to his feet.
Ruiz postures up in Steak's guard and throws a big left but Steak blocks it.
Steak preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Steak is pulling down on Ruiz's head. It's preventing any offense from Ruiz, at least for the moment.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Cheese Steak.
Ruiz has a takedown stuffed.
Steak throws a low kick but Ruiz moves out of range easily.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Steak throws a right and a left that Ruiz avoids nicely.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Dean Ruiz will probably get the nod.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! And we move into the final round!


Steak tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Ruiz swivels and escapes.
Steak swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Ruiz tries to clinch there but Steak circles away.

Steak darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Steak is trying to control the action in half guard but Ruiz is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Ruiz wants to get back to his feet.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Steak in particular looking to stall.

That's one minute gone in the round.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Cheese Steak hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Steak gets a double leg takedown into Ruiz's guard.
Steak passes Ruiz's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Steak seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Ruiz does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Ruiz moves into full guard.
Steak sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Ruiz's guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Steak tries to stand but his hand is stuck under Ruiz.
Ruiz is trying to stand.
Steak wants to stand but Ruiz has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
Steak is looking to stall here but Ruiz recovers full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Steak looking to pass the guard.
Steak trying to stand up but can't free himself from Ruiz's guard.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Cheese Steak wasn't active enough on the ground.
Ruiz takes a shot right to the bread basket.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Ruiz wants to clinch

and Steak counters by clinching up.
Ruiz tries for a takedown. No joy.
Ruiz tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Steak jumps guard and drags Ruiz to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Ruiz landing with the ground and pound.

Ruiz avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Steak not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Steak has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

And that's the end of the fight!
Cheese Steak comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Steak has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
