PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Usva Kallio (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jake Roxas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Usva Kallio!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Jake Roxas!
The judges for this bout are Anni Minnemäki, Ben Zyskovitsi and Matti Vanhoillinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Roxas thows a body shot but no joy.
Kallio fails with a takedown attempt.
Roxas misses with a wild body shot.
Kallio takes a body punch but keeps moving.

Kallio uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Roxas.

and Kallio counters with a leg kick.

Roxas changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Kallio looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Roxas wants to lay and pray for a moment but Kallio keeps working.
Kallio manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Kallio is trying to maintain the position but Roxas is very close to passing his half guard.

Kallio is not content to let Roxas control the position.
Roxas throwing shots but Kallio is blocking nicely.
Roxas thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Kallio's head.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Roxas throws a strike but Kallio rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Kallio fails with the takedown

and Roxas counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Roxas.

Kallio is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Kallio tries to stall but Roxas uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Roxas throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Kallio blocks it with crossed arms.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Jake Roxas showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Kallio's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Kallio tries to close the distance and clinch up but Roxas swats him away and circles back towards the center.
A head kick from Kallio lands but Roxas takes it in his stride.
Kallio takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Roxas throws a hook to the side of Kallio's head but Kallio sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Kallio bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Roxas's guard.
Kallio wants to stand but Roxas has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Roxas really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Kallio. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Kallio enables Roxas to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Kallio manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Jake Roxas comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Roxas has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
