PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Owen Castle (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ivan Vasilyevich (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Vasilyevich comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Billy Connolly - Ivan the terrible kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Owen Castle could well score a knockout today. He has the power to get to Ivan Vasilyevich's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Owen Castle!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Ivan Vasilyevich!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Micheangelo Fripello and Jeff Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Castle thows a body shot but no joy.
Castle tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Vasilyevich was well out of range. Poor timing from Castle.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Vasilyevich enables Castle to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Vasilyevich manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Castle trying to control the position from guard on top but Vasilyevich is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Vasilyevich is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Castle trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Vasilyevich has his foot on Castle's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Castle works his way back into a safe position though.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Vasilyevich is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Castle off and has taken his back!

Vasilyevich has his opponent's back and is working for the choke.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Vasilyevich is looking to finish with some ground and pound!
Vasilyevich wants to control but Castle is keeping busy.
Castle has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage.
Castle rolls, trying to escape but Vasilyevich keeps control of the position.
Castle prevents Vasilyevich from getting a body triangle.
Castle is trapped and Vasilyevich is scoring with shots to the head and body.

Vasilyevich is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Castle defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.

Vasilyevich is trying to stick to Castle's back but Castle is turning into Vasilyevich. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Vasilyevich's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Castle.
Castle not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Vasilyevich wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Castle wants to control from the top but Vasilyevich keeps moving.
This has been an exciting period of action!
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

Vasilyevich had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Castle defends it easily.
Vasilyevich controls Castle momentarily but Castle frees himself.
Vasilyevich wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Vasilyevich escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Castle gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Vasilyevich is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ivan Vasilyevich dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Vasilyevich connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.
Castle swings and misses with a hook to the body.
A slapping body kick lands there for Vasilyevich.
Castle walks forward, straight into a front kick from Vasilyevich.
Castle looks to score with a jab to the body but Vasilyevich is just out of range.

Vasilyevich gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Castle to score an easy takedown into full guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Castle won't allow Vasilyevich to sweep him here.

Vasilyevich working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Castle doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Castle manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Vasilyevich is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Castle is aware though and is defending well.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Vasilyevich is looking for a kimura but Castle is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Vasilyevich to get the leverage.
Vasilyevich wants to take a breather but Castle is having none of it.
Castle is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Vasilyevich working his ground and pound in the gym. So far it seems to be working well.
Vasilyevich takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Ivan Vasilyevich showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Ivan Vasilyevich was stalling too much, according to the referee.

Vasilyevich uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Castle.

Well Vasilyevich has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
