PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Jon Byers (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Manuel Alonso (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Alonso has chosen Narco y Reincidentes - Huracán as his entrance music. Manuel Alonso has the power to score a knockout today if he connects clean with Jon Byers's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jon Byers!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Manuel Alonso!
The judges for this bout are Chris Dean, Topper Green and Damien Edna.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Alonso gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Both guys are working to get underhooks.
Byers jumps guard but Alonso stands there with Byers around his waist. Byers gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Alonso gets control of Byers's arms and successfully pulls guard. Alonso will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Alonso is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Byers stands up over Alonso, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Byers has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Alonso looking to hit a scissor sweep but Byers is one step ahead there.

Alonso is looking for a triangle here but Byers uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.

Byers has control of Alonso's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Alonso regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Byers avoids the attempt from Alonso to control.

Byers stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.

Alonso throws a right and a left that both miss.

Byers regains half guard, as Alonso was trying to land strikes.
Alonso seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Byers does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Byers is staying active underneath Alonso, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Alonso is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Byers has managed to free his arm - good work.

Byers moves into full guard.
Byers bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Alonso's guard.
Byers scoring with some ground and pound.

Alonso working for submissions but it's allowed Byers to get to half guard.

Byers seems to be working for a kimura but Alonso defends the submission attempt.

Alonso wants to improve his position but Byers is controlling well.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Byers throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Alonso avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Byers.
Alonso is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Byers's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Byers's back!

Alonso doesn't have the hooks in and Byers manages to turn into his guard.
Alonso is trying to hold Byers in close to prevent damage but Byers has managed to pass into half guard.

Byers is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Alonso is just riding it out for now. Byers eventually gives up the hold.

Alonso sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
Manuel Alonso has got the better of the ground game so far.
Alonso is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Byers will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Alonso has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Byers is working away from the top position though.
Byers really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Alonso moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Manuel Alonso showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. And we move into the final round!

Byers utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Byers wants to stand up but Alonso is controlling him.
Alonso trying to control but Byers is working from the bottom.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Manuel Alonso wasn't active enough on the ground.

Alonso looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Byers!

Byers tries to buck Alonso off but Alonso is having none of it.

Alonso wants to lay and pray for a moment but Byers keeps working.
Alonso is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

Byers is in all sorts of trouble here.

Alonso wants to stand but his hand is trapped. Byers uses the opportunity to regain full guard.

Manuel Alonso comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Alonso has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
