PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Efren Solis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jon Cardoso (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jon Cardoso has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Efren Solis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jon Cardoso!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Micheangelo Fripello and Ryoma Takatsuka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cardoso misses with a combination

and Solis counters by moving into the clinch.
Cardoso is trying to pull guard but Solis turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Cardoso has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Solis uses from the top position.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Solis showing good wrestling skills to control the position.

Cardoso working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Solis doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Solis manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Solis trying to control the position from guard on top but Cardoso is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Solis is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Cardoso is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Efren Solis has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Cardoso shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Solis defends it nicely.

Cardoso gets a clinch.

Solis has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Cardoso clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
Cardoso trying to control but he's just got himself in more trouble.

Solis lands a shot to the body.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Cardoso takes a big shot to the side of the head.

Cardoso rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Cardoso tries to roll over but Solis keeps him under control.
Cardoso has hold of Solis's hands but Solis slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Solis sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Cardoso defending well though.
Cardoso slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Solis scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Solis really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Cardoso had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Solis defends it easily.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Solis accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Cardoso has momentary wrist control but Solis slips an elbow through the middle.

Solis stands up and waves to Cardoso to follow him.

Cardoso avoids the head kick by Solis.

Cardoso with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Solis to score with a decent uppercut.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Cardoso is defended easily by Solis.
Solis tries to close the distance and clinch but Cardoso swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Solis clinches up with Cardoso and pushes him back against the cage.

Cardoso shoots for a takedown but Solis saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Solis prevents Cardoso from breaking the clinch.

Cardoso tries to pull guard but Solis forces him back to his feet, against the cage.

Cardoso jumps guard and drags Solis to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Cardoso fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

and Solis makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. Cardoso really felt that one!
Solis lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Cardoso circles away quickly and effectively.

Solis closes the distance and pushes Cardoso back into the cage.

Solis moves into the clinch successfully.

Cardoso pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Efren Solis is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Cardoso is defended easily by Solis.
Solis fakes the leg kick and cracks Cardoso in the body.

Solis slaps away a takedown attempt from Cardoso, before circling back to the center of the mat.

Solis throws a wild body kick that Cardoso sees coming a mile off.
Solis tries to close the distance and clinch up but Cardoso swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Solis lands with an uppercut that bounces Cardoso off the cage and back into range.
Solis's corner calls for a 1-2. Solis obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
Solis misses with an attempted mid kick.
Cardoso takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
A left lands for Solis.
Solis pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.

Solis gets tackled into the cage by Cardoso. Cardoso maintains the clinch.
Cardoso blocks an elbow strike.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Cardoso is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Solis to keep the fight standing.
Cardoso gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Solis.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

Solis misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Cardoso shoots in looking for a takedown but Solis manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Cardoso's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Efren Solis has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jon Cardoso.
Cardoso takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Cardoso tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Solis defends well and Cardoso ends up having to push Solis into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Solis is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches.

Cardoso ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Cardoso no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Solis tries to land a front kick but Cardoso steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.

Cardoso rushes Solis and presses him up against the cage.
Cardoso lands a shot to the body.
Solis avoiding damage as Cardoso throws knees to the body.
Cardoso is pressed up against the cage. Solis has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Cardoso down to the mat. Cardoso avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Cardoso has his takedown stuffed

and Solis counters by clinching up.
Solis lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Cardoso backwards.

Solis gets underhooks to prevent Cardoso's takedown attempt.
Cardoso wants to break free but Solis has control.
Cardoso wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Cardoso tries for a takedown. No joy.
Solis drops down looking for an ankle pick but Cardoso pulls his leg out and moves away.
Solis throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Cardoso.
Solis throws a body kick that sends a sickening thudding noise reverberating around the arena.
Solis tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Cardoso paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Jon Cardoso has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Efren Solis is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Solis uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Cardoso.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Efren Solis.
Well Solis has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
