PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Gary Dunn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Edison Pope (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pope comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Schoolboy Q - Man of the Year kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Gary Dunn has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Gary Dunn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Edison Pope!
The judges for this bout are Alyssa Summers, Eddie Farnsworth and Anthony Taglia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice body punch from Pope.
Pope throws a right and a left that Dunn avoids nicely.

Pope shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Dunn is trying to control but Pope passes into side control!
Dunn wants to get back to his feet.
Dunn wants to control but Pope postures up.
Dunn misses with an elbow from the bottom.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Dunn bucks up and tries to throw Pope off but instead Pope has got his back!
Dunn trying to control the hands but Pope won't let him.
Dunn tries to escape the position.
Dunn is trying to stand back up.
Dunn just trying to survive but Pope is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Dunn tries to escape but Pope has the hooks in and won't let him break free.

Pope decides to stand up.
The crowd cheers as Pope lands an impressive looking overhand right. Dunn doesn't seem phased though.
Dunn takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
Pope lands with an overhand left.


Dunn is rocked!
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Pope throws a big shot that misses.
Pope tries a head kick but it misses.
Pope looks winded!
Pope throws a series of punches but Dunn moves out of range.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Pope throws a leg kick that is checked
and Dunn counters with a left and a right that stings Pope.
Pope throws an off balance right hand
and Dunn counters with an inside leg kick.
Pope throws a leg kick that is checked

and Dunn holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Pope is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Dunn tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Pope smiles and moves away.
Pope thows a left - swing and a miss!

Dunn looking to score a takedown here. Pope is defending well but Dunn drives through and ends up in Pope's guard.

Dunn postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Pope is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Dunn, into his guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Dunn not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Pope wants to stand and escape but instead Dunn has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
Dunn postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Pope keeping moving, preventing Dunn from controlling successfully.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Edison Pope dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Pope throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Pope misses with a lunging right hand

and Dunn counters by clinching up.
Dunn tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Pope missing with knees to the body.
Dunn tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Pope smiles and moves away.
Gary Dunn is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Pope buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Pope throws an ugly left hook that misses
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
and Dunn counters with a big head kick but Pope shrugs it off.
Pope waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Dunn.
Pope misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Pope is breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Pope throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Dunn stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.

Pope fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Dunn to the ground. Pope is now in Dunn's guard.
Pope trying to stand up but can't free himself from Dunn's guard.
Dunn looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Pope has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Dunn is proving hard to escape from.
Dunn seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Pope stops Dunn from standing up.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Pope wants to stand but Dunn has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Dunn fails with a takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Gary Dunn. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Pope throws a left and a right that both miss
and Dunn finishes the little exchange by landing a big kick to the body.

Dunn fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Pope, pushing him back against the cage.

Dunn ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Dunn no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Dunn is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Pope has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Dunn is proving hard to escape from.

Dunn doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Dunn pulls Pope in close to prevent any damage.
Dunn is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Dunn will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Dunn is looking to stand back up but Pope counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Dunn.
Pope prevents Dunn from standing back up.

Pope stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Dunn to get to his feet.
Dunn gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there.
Pope misses with the combination.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Dunn tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Pope swivels and escapes.

Pope shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Pope showed some decent athleticism there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Edison Pope showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!

and Dunn counters with a left and a right that stings Pope.
Pope tries to clinch but Dunn moves out of range.

Dunn fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Pope to the ground. Dunn is now in Pope's guard.
Dunn loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Dunn trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Dunn working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Dunn connects with a couple of short punches.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Pope wants to stand up but Dunn is controlling him.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Edison Pope hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Dunn throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Pope's waist but Pope gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Dunn off to one side.
Pope misses with a right hand
and Dunn counters with a head kick. That will keep Pope thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!
Dunn gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Pope.
Dunn with a poor takedown
and Pope makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Dunn shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Pope defends it nicely.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Gary Dunn. That's going to take a lot out of him.

and Dunn counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.

Pope rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Dunn counters with a head kick. That will keep Pope thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!

and Dunn counters by clinching up.

Dunn decides to pull guard.

Pope stands up from Dunn's guard - Pope perhaps looking for a knockout.
Dunn falls off balance throwing a combination
and Pope counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Edison Pope seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Dunn closes the distance and clinches.
Pope is looking to break free of the clinch but Dunn has double underhooks.

Pope escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Pope is looking to clinch but Dunn is avoiding it.
Dunn really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Pope avoids a punch combination nicely.
Pope scores with a nice right hand.

Pope fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Dunn is out of range.

and Dunn holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Dunn pulls guard.
Dunn not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Dunn pulls Pope in close to prevent any damage.

Pope decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Dunn, up you get!

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Gary Dunn.
I think Pope has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
