PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Anton Pope (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Zalmai Qazi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Qazi has chosen "Arab Americans" by Jim Johnston as his entrance music. Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Anton Pope!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Zalmai Qazi!
The judges for this bout are Elvis Blanc, Dillan Fox and Alec Ball.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Qazi uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Pope.

Qazi gets caught napping as Pope dives in and scores a takedown. Qazi manages to retain guard.
Pope will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Pope tries to stand but Qazi is controlling from the bottom.
Pope showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
Pope seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Qazi for as long as he can get away with.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Qazi wants to sweep but no luck.

Qazi escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Pope gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Pope really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Pope is stalling in the full guard.
Pope has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Anton Pope has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.

Qazi fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Pope, pushing him back against the cage.
Qazi is trying to push Pope away but Pope has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Qazi looks winded!

Pope pulls guard effortlessly.
Pope has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Qazi accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Qazi in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Pope is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

Anton Pope has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.

Qazi moves into the clinch successfully.

Qazi tries to pull guard but Pope won't allow it.
Qazi tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Pope just stands there and leans against the cage.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Qazi clinches up against the cage.
Qazi is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Anton Pope has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Zalmai Qazi.
Pope digs a right hand into Qazi's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Qazi's gas tank.

Pope manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Pope wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Anton Pope just wasn't active enough.

Pope is pulling down on Qazi's head to control his posture.
Qazi wants to control from the top but Pope keeps moving.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Pope is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
We've been informed that Qazi has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
Pope pulls Qazi in close to prevent any damage.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Qazi shoots for a takedown but Pope saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Pope smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
Qazi tries to score a power double leg takedown but Pope sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Qazi somewhat.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Pope jabs away that one connects to the head of his opponent.

Pope gets control of Qazi's arms and successfully pulls guard. Pope will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Pope seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Pope fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Qazi to the ground. Pope is now in Qazi's guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Pope closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Pope has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Pope stands up and beckons Qazi to his feet.

Pope's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Pope, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
