PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Steve Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jack Bratts (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jack Bratts told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Steve Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Jack Bratts!
The judges for this bout are Paul Tew, Donald Grub and Colin Fotheringham.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bratts throws a combination. Smith tries to block but a couple of punches get through.


It looks like Steve Smith has been cut.
Bratts shoots in and drives through. Smith sprawls well.
Bratts with a hook.
Smith tries for a takedown but Bratts circles away easily
and Bratts counters with a straight right hand.
Bratts throws a head kick that looked like it stung.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Smith shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Bratts lands with a nice body kick.
Smith is breathing heavily.

Bratts knocks Smith to the floor with a head kick! Can he finish him!?


Smith is rocked!
Bratts moves into full mount!
Oh Smith is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!

Bratts jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Smith manages to avoid the submission attempt.

Bratts wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Smith, who protects the arm well.
Smith seems to have got his legs back now.
Smith parries the strikes from Bratts easily there. Bratts is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Smith to escape.
Bratts is looking to take a break and control but Smith is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Smith dodges the ground and pound from Bratts.

You can see the frustration on Smith's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Bratts stands up.

Bratts clinches with his opponent.
Smith is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Bratts gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Steve Smith. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Smith is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Smith tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Bratts just stands there and leans against the cage.
Smith has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Bratts avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Smith closes the distance and clinches up with Bratts, looking for a takedown. Smith pushes Bratts against the cage but Bratts circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Steve Smith's cut is getting worse.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for leaving it all in the cage!
Bratts ducks down and throws a hook to the body.

Smith shoots in but no luck this time.
Bratts goes for a high kick. It partially lands.
This is turning into a torrid day at the office for Smith. He's trying desperately to land a takedown but he's failing miserably and getting slapped silly on the feet to compound his misery.
Smith takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.
Bratts swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Smith.


Steve Smith's cut is bleeding quite badly. He's got to try and protect it.
A jab-cross combination lands for Bratts and sends Smith crashing to the mat! Bratts follows him down to the mat - Smith regains half guard but he's not out of trouble yet!

Bratts frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

Smith is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Bratts pulls his head out easily.

Bratts unloads a knee to the mid-section. Smith lets out a prehistoric sounding urrrrgh.

Smith has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Bratts avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Bratts looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Smith is fending him off so far but Bratts persists. Nope, Smith circles away and we're back to standing.
Smith closes the distance and clinches up with Bratts, looking for a takedown. Smith pushes Bratts against the cage but Bratts circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Smith takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Bratts lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
Smith shoots and misses
and Bratts counters with a left to the body.

Bratts stuffs the takedown.
Bratts closes the distance and lands a one-two.

Bratts has Smith up against the cage in a clinch.
Smith tries to pull guard but Bratts won't allow it.

Bratts lands a nice knee to the body.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.
Bratts gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Smith.

Bratts keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Bratts fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Smith, pushing him back against the cage.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Smith tries to pull guard but Bratts holds him up against the cage and eventually Smith drops back down to his feet.

Bratts breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Smith fails to land the takedown.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Bratts drives through and clinches with Smith against the cage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Bratts lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Steve Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Smith tries to score a body lock takedown but Bratts shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Smith shoots in looking for a takedown. Bratts tries to sprawl out of it but Smith keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Bratts manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Smith tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Bratts smiles and moves away.
Bratts tries for a takedown but Smith sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Smith shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Bratts but Bratts pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Bratts lands a nice hook to Smith's body. Smith takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Jack Bratts showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Bratts drops back looking for a leg! Smith is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Smith manages to kick Bratts off! Bratts jumps back into Smith's guard.

Bratts is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Smith is looking for a triangle but Bratts pushes his legs off easily.

Smith isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Bratts stacks Smith on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Bratts!
Smith tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Bratts wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Bratts throws an elbow but Smith slips to the side and avoids it well.
Bratts wants to control but Smith is keeping him busy.
Smith is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Bratts thows a huge punch but Smith dodges it nicely.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Bratts's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.
Jack Bratts seems to be working more effectively in the clinch in the fight so far.

Smith gets control of Bratts's arms and successfully pulls guard. Smith will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Smith escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Bratts gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

I've got Bratts winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
