Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Johnson Kovkov!
The judges for this bout are Konstantin Menshow, Vladimir Khabensky and Fedor Mirinova.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Kovkov drives through with a takedown into guard.
Martinez keeping moving, preventing Kovkov from controlling successfully.
Kovkov is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Martinez is pulling down on Kovkov's head to control his posture.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Johnson Kovkov was stalling too much, according to the referee.

Kovkov closes the distance and pushes Martinez back into the cage.

Kovkov turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Kovkov manages to end up in side control.

You can see the frustration on Martinez's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Martinez sneaks back into half guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Martinez wants to get back to his feet.
Martinez is staying active underneath Kovkov, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Martinez manages to get to full guard.
Martinez seems keen to control Kovkov's posture.
Kovkov looking to pass the guard.
Kovkov is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Martinez is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Kovkov lands with a kick to the ribs.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Kovkov gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Martinez to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Kovkov is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Martinez might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Martinez stands up over Kovkov, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Martinez makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Kovkov looks winded!
This has been an exciting period of action!

Martinez gets to his feet - Kovkov follows without any prompting.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Martinez takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.

Kovkov closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Kovkov lands in his opponent's guard.
Martinez wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Martinez is on top in guard.
Martinez is in close to Kovkov's body, working some short punches and elbows.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Martinez is working Kovkov over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Martinez postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

Martinez decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Kovkov, up you get!
This has been an exciting period of action!

Martinez gets caught napping as Kovkov dives in and scores a takedown. Martinez manages to retain guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kovkov being controlled here momentarily.
Martinez lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Kovkov!
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Kovkov tries to improve his position but Martinez has taken his back! Martinez has a choke - it's sunk in pretty tight... Will Kovkov tap? No... maybe... yes! He's tapped! Martinez pushes Kovkov away and gets up to celebrate with his corner!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:58 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Jeff Martinez!
