Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between JayDee Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and David Whyte (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). David Whyte has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, JayDee Penn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, David Whyte!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Chris Saunders and Ryoma Takatsuka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Penn.
Penn goes for a double leg but Whyte avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Whyte continues to drive forward.
Penn drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Penn has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for JayDee Penn. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Penn has Whyte pressed against the cage, preventing Whyte from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Whyte told us before the fight that he's been working on his elbows. An under utilised technique these days - let's see if it can sway the outcome of the fight.
Penn has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Whyte is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Penn jumps into guard, dragging Whyte to the mat.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Penn is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Whyte can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Penn is working for a guillotine from mount but Whyte frees his head quite easily.
Penn trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Whyte is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
A nice elbow there by Penn.

Penn wants to control the pace but Whyte is squirming around nicely.
Penn throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Whyte because Penn loaded up on that one.
Penn is looking to work his way around to Whyte's back. He needs to be careful though, as he's in danger of losing this dominant position.
Penn throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Penn seems to be looking to move to his opponent's back but Whyte is holding on tight.
Whyte regains half guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Penn is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Whyte sees it coming and defends easily.

Penn trying to mount his opponent but Whyte defends it.

Penn is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Whyte is just riding it out for now. Penn eventually gives up the hold.

Penn is working for a kimura but Whyte is defending it quite comfortably.

Penn is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Whyte defends it well.

Penn is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Whyte has managed to free his arm - good work.

Penn is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Penn seems to be looking for submissions.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

JayDee Penn dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Penn takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.


It looks like JayDee Penn has been cut.
Whyte misses with a looping right.
Whyte digs a good hook to Penn's body.
Penn shoots in looking for a takedown. Whyte tries to sprawl out of it but Penn keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Whyte manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Penn fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Whyte throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Penn shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Whyte sprawls well. Whyte wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Penn gets slowly back to his feet.

Penn slips a jab and a cross from Whyte.
Whyte scores with a crisp jab that stopped Penn in his tracks.
Penn shoots in for a takedown but Whyte shows good takedown defense.
Whyte cracks Penn with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.

Whyte feints and then winds up with a huge right hand that connects perfectly and sends Penn sprawling to the canvas! Penn rolls over backwards and springs off the cage and manages to regain his footing - how acrobatic! Oh, he's still wobbly - can Whyte finish him?!


Penn is rocked!
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Whyte lands a body shot.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Whyte throws a right and a left that both miss.
Whyte connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Penn's hands.


JayDee Penn's cut is getting worse.
David Whyte is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Penn closes the distance and clinches up with Whyte, looking for a takedown. Penn pushes Whyte against the cage but Whyte circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Whyte lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Oh Penn is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
JayDee Penn seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Penn is defended easily by Whyte.
Penn seems to have got his legs back now.
Penn fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Whyte throws a 1-2 combo that connects squarely on Penn's jaw, knocking him onto his back! Whyte dives in looking to finish as Penn flails his arms in a desperate attempt to block Whyte's strikes! Whyte is raining down hammerfists and the ref stops it! Penn's desperate flailing just didn't constitute intelligent defence. Some people will probably question the ref's decision but Penn was definitely hurt and the ref saved him from taking unnecessary punishment. A fighter's safety is paramount in this sport.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:48 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). David Whyte!
