PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Vinnie Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Benji Hidori (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hidori comes into a darkened arena with his song building. allejandro kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Vinnie Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 6 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Benji Hidori!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Michael Johnstone and Santiago Holmes.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hidori keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Smith throws a nice inside leg kick.
Smith avoids the body shot from Hidori.
Hidori doesn't manage to clinch there - Smith circles away.
Hidori tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Hidori looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Hidori enables Smith to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Hidori manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Smith is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Smith has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Smith thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Hidori looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Smith passes into half guard.
Smith content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Smith wants to free his trapped foot but Hidori is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Smith passes to full mount!
Smith controlling the position easily from mount.
Smith landing punches.

Hidori defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Smith.
Hidori tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Smith pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
We've been hearing good reports from Smith's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

The referee warns Hidori that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.

Smith looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Smith is in the full mount, landing strikes.
Smith controlling the pace for now.

Smith can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Hidori is looking to escape.
Hidori really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Smith. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Smith goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Hidori is on top in guard.
Smith pulls Hidori in close to prevent any damage.
Smith manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Hidori manages to get himself to full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Smith trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Smith not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Hidori throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.
Hidori keeping moving, preventing Smith from controlling successfully.
Hidori seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

Hidori is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Smith drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Smith jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Hidori closes this distance looking for a takedown but Smith circles away.
Hidori's coach down at Clean and Green was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Hidori's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.
Hidori shoots for a takedown but Smith saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Hidori throws a left and a right that both miss

and Smith holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Smith comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush.
Hidori is trying to pull guard but Smith turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Vinnie Smith has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Benji Hidori.
Hidori takes a knee to the side of the body.
Hidori tries to pull guard but Smith forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Smith lands a damaging elbow.
Hidori is trying to pull guard but Smith turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Hidori tries to land a knee to the head but Smith blocks with his arms.

Smith breaks from the clinch.
Smith looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Hidori is fending him off so far but Smith persists. Nope, Hidori circles away and we're back to standing.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Smith throws a nice outside leg kick.
Smith feints and then cracks Hidori's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Hidori down.
Hidori tries to close the distance and clinch but Smith swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Hidori shoots for a takedown but Smith saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Hidori dives in for a single leg takedown but Smith sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Hidori is breathing heavily.
Smith is defending well against a takedown attempt.
Smith looking for a takedown.
Smith putting his Muay Thai to good use. He has Hidori in a tight clinch and is doing some damage with knees to the body.

Smith manages to pull guard.
Hidori being controlled here momentarily.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Smith manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Hidori can't escape the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Smith has hold of an arm here, looking to extend it. He's committed to the armbar attempt here! Will he get it?! Yes! Hidori is forced to tap!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:56 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Vinnie Smith!
A victorious Vinnie Smith thanked his army of followers in his post fight interview, telling people to make sure they follow him on Twitter.
Benji Hidori was interviewed post fight and said 'I have dishonored myself and my fans.'.
