PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Nicolas Refn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shawn Wexler (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Wexler has chosen Go To Sleep - Eminem as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 24 - 25 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Nicolas Refn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 19 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Shawn Wexler!
The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, Trevor Gratis and Gregory Folan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Refn swings widly with a right hand
and Wexler counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Refn fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Wexler swats away the attempt to clinch by Refn.

Refn throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Wexler tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Refn is in Wexler's guard.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Wexler looking to control.
Refn throws a big right hand that misses.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Wexler controls Refn momentarily but Refn frees himself.
Refn looking to sit in guard and control but Wexler gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Wexler's corner is telling him to maintain position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Wexler stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Refn swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Wexler is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Wexler trying to control the position from guard on top but Refn is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Wexler wants to pass the guard but Refn is keeping the position.
Refn keeping moving, preventing Wexler from controlling successfully.
Refn throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Wexler lands a couple of digs.
Wexler is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Refn is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Wexler throws a big elbow that misses.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Wexler forces his way into half guard.

Wexler wants to work for an arm triangle but Refn is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Wexler thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Refn's head.
Wexler tries to pass the half guard into mount. Refn knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Wexler has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Wexler trying to control the action but Refn is working from the bottom.
Refn gets back to full guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Wexler tries to free his leg and advance position but Refn is retaining full guard.
Wexler is still trying to improve position.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Shawn Wexler.
Wexler throws an overhand right that lands on Refn's shoulder, as Refn tries to avoid the shot.

Refn dives in and scores a takedown into Wexler's guard.

Wexler working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Refn doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Wexler is tightening it up a little... Refn has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Refn reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Refn taps out! Nice BJJ there by Wexler!
