The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Vargas throws a hook but Newsom blocks it.
Newsom takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Vargas tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Newsom manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Newsom avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
The crowd cheers as Vargas lands an impressive looking overhand right. Newsom doesn't seem phased though.
Vargas misses the shot to the body.
Vargas throws out a leg kick but Newsom moves out of range and Vargas only half commits.

Newsom darts in looking for a takedown but Vargas gets double underhooks and turns Newsom into the cage.
Vargas wants to break the clinch but can't.

Vargas breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Vargas rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Newsom moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Vargas throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Newsom.

Newsom closes this distance looking for a takedown but Vargas circles away.
Horrible takedown by Newsom or perhaps it was just good defense by Vargas which made him look bad.

Vargas attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.

Vargas connects with a body shot that sends Newsom's belly button to the back.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Vargas turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.

Vargas lands a left and a right that send Newsom crashing to the mat, dazed. Vargas thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!

It looks like Timothy Newsom has been cut.
Newsom avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Oh Newsom is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Some wild striking there from Vargas.
Newsom seems to have got his legs back now.
Vargas is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Newsom keeps the fight on the outside.
Vargas throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Vargas feints and then winds up with a huge right hand that connects perfectly and sends Newsom sprawling to the canvas! Newsom rolls over backwards and springs off the cage and manages to regain his footing - how acrobatic! Oh, he's still wobbly - can Vargas finish him?!
Jordan Vargas seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Newsom looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Vargas is fending him off so far but Newsom persists. Nope, Vargas circles away and we're back to standing.

Vargas gets in close and tags Newsom with a short punch that almost sends Newsom to the mat! Oh Newsom is in big trouble! He turns his back on Vargas, trying to create some distance but Vargas rushes him, striking wildly and Newsom goes down! The referee tackles Vargas into the cage to end the fight! Vargas is one violent man!
