PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rick Sampson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gerry Costello (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Sampson comes to the cage accompanied by "Off the Chain" by Serg Salinas. Costello is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Bad boys. The fight MMA fans around the world have waited their entire lives for!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Rick Sampson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Gerry Costello!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Sampson closes the distance and pushes Costello back into the cage.
Sampson looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this!
Costello fails to pull guard.
Costello tries to pull guard but Sampson forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Costello tries for a takedown. No joy.

Costello is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Costello really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Sampson. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Sampson won't allow Costello to sweep him here.

Costello wriggles free and stands up.
Sampson misses with a takedown

so Costello counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Costello decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Sampson, up you get!

Costello drives through and clinches with Sampson against the cage.

Costello manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Costello pulls Sampson in close to prevent any damage.
Costello bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Sampson's guard.
Sampson has momentary wrist control but Costello slips an elbow through the middle.
Sampson might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Costello would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Costello wants to pass the guard but Sampson is keeping the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Costello passes Sampson's left leg - he's now in half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Costello is looking for a kimura but Sampson is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Costello to get the leverage.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Costello tries to stand and escape but Sampson is controlling the position.

The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Costello takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.
Sampson prevents a takedown attempt there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Costello looks to land a combination but Sampson avoids it well.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Costello forces Sampson back against the cage and clinches.

Costello goes for a takedown in the clinch but Sampson prevents it.
Costello jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Sampson walks away with a smile on his face. Costello gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Costello shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Costello was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Costello content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
Costello's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Sampson wants to control but Costello postures up.
Sampson tries to control but end up mounted... ooooh, that's bad.

Costello gets to his feet and calls his opponent to stand. Here come the fireworks!
Costello misses with a double jab.
Costello tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Costello is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Sampson to keep the fight standing.

Costello has been looking to improve his clinch game in recent weeks. So far he's outscoring his opponent in the clinch so it seems to have been worthwhile.

Costello tries to close the distance and clinch up but Sampson swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Costello looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Sampson!

Costello has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Costello lands an overhand right.
No joy there for Sampson, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Costello lands a head kick. Sampson smiles back at him and beckons him forward.
Costello moves in looking to clinch but Sampson pushes him off.
Costello throws a head kick that half lands.

Costello drives through with a takedown into Sampson's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Sampson striking off his back but it's not causing Costello any problems.
Costello has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Costello looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Let's hope that Costello has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Costello is trying to trip Sampson. He has hold of a leg but Sampson is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Costello persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Costello slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Gerry Costello seems to be working more effectively in the clinch in the fight so far.
Costello changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Sampson fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Gerry Costello is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Sampson looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.

Well Costello has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
