PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Dan Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and BJ Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Penn has chosen Bebot-Black Eyed Pease as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Both fighter's entrance songs getting the crowd jumping here.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Dan Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 1, fighting out of Amsterdam, BJ Penn!
The judges for this bout are Radbod Blank, Aafke Stam and Paulsen Ambrosius.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Smith gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Penn looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!

Smith jumps guard and drags Penn to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Smith has his hands on Penn's head, controlling the position.
Smith controls Penn momentarily but Penn frees himself.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Smith is on top in guard.
Smith postures up.
Smith's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Smith connects with a couple of short punches.
Penn is looking to sweep but instead, Smith has passed into half guard.

Smith decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.

Smith shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Penn's guard.

Smith decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Smith fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Penn, pushing him back against the cage.

Smith has picked Penn up - he's going for a ride! Smith dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
Smith is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Smith is nestled in close to Penn, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Smith decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.
Smith shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Penn as he avoids it easily.
BJ Penn seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Smith shoots in for a takedown but Penn shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Penn throws a jab but it's blocked by Smith.
Smith smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.

Smith clinches up with Penn and pushes him back against the cage.

Smith dives in and scores a takedown into Penn's guard.

Smith has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

We're going to have a standup here because Dan Smith wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.

We've been hearing good reports from Smith's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Smith tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Smith has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Smith wants the takedown. Penn is fighting it off but Smith persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Penn's guard against the cage.

Smith stands up from Penn's guard - Smith perhaps looking for a knockout.
A head kick from Smith lands but Penn takes it in his stride.


It looks like BJ Penn has been cut.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Smith gets to his feet. Penn looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Penn chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Smith can pounce on him.

Smith seems to be working for a kimura but Penn defends the submission attempt.

Smith is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Penn is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Penn is looking for a sweep. Smith is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Well, if Smith is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Penn wants to improve his position but Smith is controlling well.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Smith in particular looking to stall.
Smith has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Dan Smith.
Horrible takedown by Smith or perhaps it was just good defense by Penn which made him look bad.
Penn shoots in for a takedown but Smith shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Smith's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Smith shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Smith was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Penn sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Smith prevents Penn from standing back up.

Smith stands up from half guard.
Penn shoots in looking for a takedown. Smith tries to sprawl out of it but Penn keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Smith manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Smith shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Smith was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Penn tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Smith gets to mount! Penn was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Dan Smith is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Smith is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Penn is surviving well by controlling Smith's body position as best he can.

Dan Smith showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Smith has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
