PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Vaimaa Fatu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Uwe Grant (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Fatu comes to the ring accompanied by So Close Now. Grant is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Wu Tang Clan - C.R.E.A.M.. The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Vaimaa Fatu!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Uwe Grant!
The judges for this bout are Josh West, Chris Saunders and Ryoma Takatsuka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Fatu looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
Grant shoots in for a double leg but Fatu sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Fatu attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.
Grant shoots and misses
and Fatu counters with a leg kick.
Fatu throws a nice inside leg kick.
Fatu with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Fatu tries a head kick but it misses.

Fatu looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Grant is refusing to be controlled, as Fatu sits in half guard.
Grant wants to get back to full guard.
Fatu tries to pass the half guard into mount. Grant knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Fatu lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Grant manages to get to full guard.
Fatu postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Grant looking for a guillotine here but Fatu defends easily.

Grant wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Fatu wants to control from the top but Grant keeps moving.

Grant has his foot on Fatu's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Fatu works his way back into a safe position though.

Grant is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Fatu defends well.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Grant bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Fatu's guard.

Grant drops back, looking for a kneebar! Fatu looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Fatu looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Fatu!
Grant is looking for a sweep.
Grant wants to control but Fatu postures up.
Grant is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

Grant tries to roll over but Fatu keeps him under control.
Fatu is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Grant reverses the position - he's now on top in Fatu's guard.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Grant is fighting to break Fatu's control of his arms but Fatu is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Fatu throws a head kick but Grant moves out of range.
Grant moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.


It looks like Uwe Grant has been cut.

Fatu gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Fatu has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Grant lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.

Fatu wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Grant is now in half guard.
Grant trying to mount his opponent but Fatu defends it.
Fatu is trying to control but can't.
Grant throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Grant is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Fatu doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Grant.
Fatu is looking for a sweep. Grant is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Fatu has hold of Grant's hands but Grant slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Grant looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Fatu with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Grant wants to control but Fatu is keeping him busy.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Grant is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Grant seems to be working for a kimura but Fatu defends the submission attempt.

Grant thows a huge punch but Fatu dodges it nicely.

Grant wants to free his trapped foot but Fatu is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Uwe Grant showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Fatu thuds a left hand into Grant's body.
Fatu throws the left hand but Grant avoids the punch easily.
Grant is trying hard to land a takedown here. Fatu sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Fatu digs a good hook to Grant's body.
Fatu misses with an attempted mid kick.
Fatu tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Grant is able to avoid easily.
Grant swings for the body but Fatu moves out of range.
Fatu keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Grant.
Fatu buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Fatu will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.

Grant drives through with a takedown into guard.
Fatu seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.
Grant missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.

Fatu lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Grant!
Grant tries to lock up and control but Fatu gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Grant bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Grant is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Fatu is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Fatu has escaped and now he's on top!

Fatu is trying to control the action in half guard but Grant is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Fatu is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Grant is trying to maintain the position but Fatu is very close to passing his half guard.
Grant keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Grant wants to get back to full guard.
The fighters are battling for position here. Grant manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Grant had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Fatu defends it easily.
Grant looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Fatu puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

Grant is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Fatu's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Fatu's back!
Grant has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

My spies in gym closing inform me that Grant has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

Grant is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Fatu is defending well though. Grant let's go of the attempt for now.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Vaimaa Fatu.
I think Fatu has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
