PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Nick Daaz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paul Norton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Daaz comes into the arena with Meshuggah - Mind's Mirror blaring out of the sound system. Norton is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Snoop Dogg - Murder was the Case. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Nick Daaz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Paul Norton!
The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Luis Engracia and Leandro Rodrigues.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Norton takes a swing at Daaz's ribcage but misses.
Norton moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.


It looks like Nick Daaz has been cut.
Norton defending well as Daaz loads up on a big left hand.
Daaz misses with an uppercut.
Daaz falls off balance throwing a combination
and Norton counters with a good, hard body kick but Daaz shrugs it off.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Norton tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Norton looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Daaz wants to get back to his feet.
Daaz keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Norton is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
I looks like Norton might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

Norton not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Daaz wants to control but Norton is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Daaz is trying to stand up here but Norton is controlling him well.
Norton has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Norton is taking a breather. Daaz says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Daaz has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Norton is working away from the top position though.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Norton works his foot free and advances to mount.
Norton lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Daaz is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Norton controlling from mount.
Daaz squirming around on the bottom, looking to escape.
Daaz manages to regain half guard. Good work.
Norton slips a nice elbow through Daaz's hands, connecting with Daaz's forehead.

Norton tries to pass the half guard into mount. Daaz knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Norton is trying to work for a kimura but Daaz is defending well.
Norton is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

Norton is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Daaz defends it well.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Norton connects with a nice short shot to Daaz's temple.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Norton wants to pass the guard but Daaz is defending well.

Norton seems to be looking for submissions.
Daaz moves into full guard.
Daaz wants to stand but Norton is controlling the position.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Norton wants to pass the guard but Daaz is keeping the position.
Daaz can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Norton controls the pace.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Norton misses with a few strikes there.
Norton tries to clinch up.
Norton takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.
Daaz lands a jab to Norton's midsection.
Daaz pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Norton ducks under a wild hook from Daaz.
Norton looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Daaz is fending him off so far but Norton persists. Nope, Daaz circles away and we're back to standing.
Daaz tests Norton's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Norton moves forwards but Daaz connects with a nice, crisp jab.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Norton staying out of range there.
A jab from Daaz finds it's way through Norton's defenses.
Norton is breathing heavily.
Norton changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Daaz tries to avoid it but Norton manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Daaz to the ground. Daaz escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Daaz swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Norton counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Daaz is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Daaz is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Norton tries to free his leg and advance position but Daaz is retaining full guard.

Norton throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Daaz works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Norton pushes down on Daaz's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Daaz knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Norton on the ground.
Daaz is trying to maintain the position but Norton is very close to passing his half guard.
Still in half guard, Norton seems content to control.
Daaz is trying to control but can't.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Norton takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Norton wants to pass to mount but Daaz is defending the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Daaz misses with an uppercut.
Daaz misses with a straight right.
Norton ducks under a wild hook from Daaz.
Norton throws a right hand that Daaz ducks under and follows up with a left that Daaz also avoids with ease.
Norton shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Daaz as he avoids it easily.
Norton tries to bum rush Daaz with a series of wild strikes but Daaz uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
The fighters circling - Daaz throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Nick Daaz seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Norton keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Daaz.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Daaz fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Norton on the side of the head.
Norton tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Norton takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Norton swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Norton tries to move into range but Daaz moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.

Daaz throws out a loose jab but Norton uses good head movement to avoid it.
Daaz lands a jab to the nose.
No luck for Norton with that takedown attempt.

Norton uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Daaz.

Norton bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.

Daaz keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Norton has a takedown stuffed.
Nick Daaz has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Paul Norton.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Norton is taking a breather. Daaz says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Paul Norton has got the better of the ground game so far.
Daaz is staying active underneath Norton, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Daaz preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
Norton slows the pace down in half guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that's the end of the fight!
Nick Daaz showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Daaz has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
