PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jermaine Choake (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Pat Small (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Choake's entrance music is Hans Zimmer - The Kraken. A fine choice. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 23 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jermaine Choake!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 20 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Pat Small!
The judges for this bout are Ben Watson, Steve Erwin and Ron Honeybunn.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Choake is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Small misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Choake.
Choake shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Small thows a left - swing and a miss!
A jab from Small finds it's way through Choake's defenses.
Choake takes a body punch but keeps moving.
A looping hook to the body misses from Choake. Small does a little dance to reset his feet.
Choake avoids the body shot from Small.
Choake takes a shot right to the bread basket.
Small tries to score with a low kick but Choake moves his leg out of the way.

Choake clinches.
Small throws a blind hook that connects with the side of Choakes head.
Choake taking a break, stalling in the clinch.
Choake is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Small is keeping busy.
Choake landing knees to the body.

That's one minute gone in the round.
A short uppercut from Small.

Small breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Jab, jab by Small - just one landing.
Small misses with a body shot.
Small throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Small throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Choake throws a front kick aimed at Small's knee but Small avoids it well.

Small clinches.

Choake has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Small regains guard immediately.
Choake working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Small's head.
Small working a defensive guard here.
Small lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Choake!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Choake is squirming around, avoiding Small's attempts to control the action.
Small can't control as he wanted to and Choake manages to get the fight back to his half guard.
Choake is looking to improve his position.
Small wants to control but Choake is keeping him busy.
Choake wants to get back to full guard.
Choake tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Small decides to return to a standing position.
Small takes one to the chin there.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Small throws a leg kick that is checked
and Choake makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.
Small wants to slow Choake down by chopping away at his legs.
Small takes a swing at Choake's ribcage but misses.
Choake tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Small manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Choake fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Small has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.

Small drives through and clinches with Choake against the cage.

Choake has clasped his hands together around Small's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Choake lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.

Choake tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
The strikes coming from Choake are missing the target in this wave of attacks.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Small wants to control but Choake postures up.
Small regains half guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Small wants to improve his position but Choake is controlling well.
Small is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.
Small keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

Choake is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Small trying to control here.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Small tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Choake manages to move to mount!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Pat Small will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Choake doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Small throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.

Small tries to land a front kick but Choake steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Choake throws a leg kick which misses Small's front leg but catches the back leg as Small tries to avoid it.
Small misses with a wild body shot.

Small clinches.
Choake is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.
Choake landing knees to the body. They look like they could hurt.
Choake is trying to drag Small to the mat but Small just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Small is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Choake gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
Choake content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Choake sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Small working a defensive guard here.
Choake wants to pass the guard but Small is keeping the position.
Choake throws a strike but Small rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Choake is controlling Small's posture.
Small wants to stand but Choake is controlling his posture from full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Choake looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Small passes Choake's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Small wants to pass the guard but Choake is defending well.

Small is working for a submission of some sort.
Choake keeping hold of Small's head, controlling as best he can.
Small is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Choake gets back to full guard.
Small being controlled here momentarily.
Small tries to free his leg and advance position but Choake is retaining full guard.

Choake throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Choake is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Small passes into half guard.

Small is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Choake has managed to free his arm - good work.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Small is pressing down on Choake's thigh, looking to free his foot. Choake is holding on for now.
Choake gets full guard.

Choake looking for a guillotine here but Small defends easily.
Choake keeping moving, preventing Small from controlling successfully.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Choake looking for a sweep. Not yet Choake, not yet.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Choake has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Small can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jermaine Choake dominated that second round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Small drives through and clinches with Choake against the cage.
Small has a couple of punches blocked by Choake.
Small creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.
Choake looking to slow down the pace here.
A frustrated look appears on Small's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Choake will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Small up against the cage.
Small is trying to break free.
Choake blocks a body shot from Small.
Small avoiding damage as Choake throws knees to the body.
Small fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
Choake blocks an uppercut.
Small tries to break free but Choake pushes him back against the cage.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Small.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Choake tightens his grip and picks Small up, before dumping him to the ground. Small manages to land in guard.
Small keeping moving, preventing Choake from controlling successfully.

Choake has gone for a leg lock! Small slips out almost immediately though and dives into Choake's guard.
Choake can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Small controls the pace.

Choake is actively looking for submissions from his back. He's worked himself a little space on the bottom and seems to be going for a triangle. No, he's switched into an armbar! That was slick! Small rolls with it to try and escape but Choake cranks on the arm and Small is forced to tap out! This one is aaaaaaaaall over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:53 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Jermaine Choake!

Jermaine Choake really struggled to get his t-shirt on before his hand was raised. Making sure that Fury Nutrition Inc. logo gets some air time is pretty tricky when you're all sweaty.
