PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between David Hopkins (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Robert Zenaldo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hopkins kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is "The Bridge Is Over" by Boogie Down Productions. Both fighters look pumped up here. Let's hope this is a good fight!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, David Hopkins!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Robert Zenaldo!
The judges for this bout are Josh West, Chris Saunders and Roger Salmon.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hopkins throws a hook but Zenaldo avoids it easily.
Zenaldo shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Hopkins defends it nicely.
We've been hearing reports that Hopkins has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Hopkins throws a right and a left that both miss.

Hopkins gets tackled into the cage by Zenaldo. Zenaldo maintains the clinch.
Hopkins is looking to take this one to the mat.
Hopkins drops down looking for an ankle pick but Zenaldo pulls his leg out and moves away.
Hopkins misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Zenaldo instigates a clinch.
Zenaldo slows down the pace here.
Hopkins has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Zenaldo is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for David Hopkins. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Zenaldo manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Zenaldo looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Zenaldo is pulling down on Hopkins's head. It's preventing any offense from Hopkins, at least for the moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hopkins has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Zenaldo is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Hopkins is aware though and is defending well.
Hopkins knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Zenaldo on the ground.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Hopkins got a little sloppy there for a moment and Zenaldo has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Hopkins has managed to get both his arms back between Zenaldo's legs - danger averted.
Hopkins throws a big elbow that misses.
Hopkins lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Hopkins stopping the sweep attempt from Zenaldo.
Hopkins throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Zenaldo works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Zenaldo preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Hopkins loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Hopkins distracts Zenaldo with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

Hopkins throws a strike but Zenaldo rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Hopkins is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Zenaldo working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Hopkins's head.
Hopkins tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Hopkins on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Hopkins tries to get out of the position.
Hopkins controls Zenaldo momentarily but Zenaldo frees himself.
Zenaldo wants to stand but Hopkins is controlling his posture from full guard.

We're going to have a standup here because David Hopkins wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Hopkins misses with a hook.
Hopkins leaves Zenaldo with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Zenaldo.
Hopkins throws a hook but Zenaldo blocks it.

Hopkins cracks Zenaldo with a big right hand and Zenaldo goes down!


It looks like Robert Zenaldo has been cut.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Hopkins lands a couple of digs.
Hopkins working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Zenaldo's head.


Zenaldo is rocked!
Zenaldo utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Zenaldo is still in real trouble! Can Hopkins finish him?

Zenaldo has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Hopkins can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Zenaldo seems to have recovered his senses.
Zenaldo wants to stand but Hopkins is controlling the position.
Zenaldo looks winded!
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

David Hopkins dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Robert Zenaldo's cut.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Hopkins lands a big uppercut and this one is all over! His foe lies motionless on the canvas - a massive one punch knockout!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:05 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). David Hopkins!
A relieved looking David Hopkins thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
