PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Edit Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rermes Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Edit Johnson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Rermes Gracie!
The judges for this bout are Chad Campbell, Anthony Taglia and Alyssa Summers.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Johnson drives through with a takedown into guard.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Johnson looking to pass the guard.

Johnson thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Johnson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Gracie swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Johnson postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Gracie is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Johnson, into his guard.

Johnson working for a triangle but Gracie defends it easily.
Gracie trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Johnson is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gracie throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Johnson works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Johnson is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Gracie defends well.
Gracie postures up in Johnson's guard and throws a big left but Johnson blocks it.

Johnson is looking for a triangle but Gracie pushes his legs off easily.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gracie with a flurry of punches that miss.

Johnson looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Johnson isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Gracie stacks Johnson on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Gracie!
Gracie throws a strike aimed at the side of Johnson's head but Johnson avoids it well.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Gracie fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Johnson manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Johnson is pressing down on Gracie's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Johnson working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Gracie doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Gracie manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Gracie thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Johnson is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Johnson looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Gracie puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
Johnson is looking to get back to full guard here but Gracie has managed to pass to side control instead.
Johnson is trying to improve his position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Johnson looks to move to half guard but instead Gracie has passed into mount! Damn!
Gracie has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Johnson keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Johnson looking to escape from mount but he's given up his back!
Johnson avoids the strikes from Gracie.
Johnson can't escape the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Johnson is working hard here to advance position.
Johnson turns into Gracie and is now in his guard.

Johnson got a little sloppy there for a moment and Gracie has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Johnson has managed to get both his arms back between Gracie's legs - danger averted.

Johnson has gone for a leg lock! Gracie slips out almost immediately though and dives into Johnson's guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Edit Johnson dominated that round.
That's time! Back to the action!



Johnson throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Gracie was covering up waiting for the punch and Johnson finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Johnson drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Gracie dives on top into guard.

Johnson has his foot on Gracie's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Gracie works his way back into a safe position though.

Johnson has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Gracie is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Johnson.
Johnson is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Johnson makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Johnson.

Johnson wants to sweep here but Gracie controlling him for the moment.

Gracie drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Gracie jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Gracie in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Johnson pushes a forearm under Gracie's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Gracie is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:53 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Edit Johnson!
After winning the bout, Edit Johnson thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
