The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McDonald scores with a kick to the body.
McDonald tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Sweeny paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Nolan McDonald seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Sweeny throws a right and a left that both miss.
Sweeny avoids the head kick by McDonald.
Sweeny tries to clinch but McDonald moves out of range.
McDonald's corner calls for a 1,2 combination and McDonald duly obliges.
Sweeny takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Sweeny shoots in for a double leg but McDonald sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
McDonald tries to bum rush Sweeny with a series of wild strikes but Sweeny uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
McDonald pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Sweeny shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
A combination from McDonald does no damage.
Sweeny tries to clinch up
and McDonald counters with a three punch combo that has Sweeny backing up. Sweeny nods at McDonald to acknowledge the strikes.

McDonald stalks Sweeny and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Sweeny's face. Sweeny staggers backwards, shaken.
A big left from Sweeny misses.
McDonald misses with a low kick.
Sweeny throws the kick towards the body but McDonald avoids it.
McDonald fails with the takedown

and Sweeny counters with a takedown into side control.
McDonald wants to get back to his feet.
The strikes coming from Sweeny are missing the target in this wave of attacks.

Sweeny is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. McDonald knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Sweeny connects with a nice short shot to McDonald's temple.
Sweeny seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but McDonald does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Sweeny wants to pass the guard but McDonald is defending well.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Sweeny moves into full mount! McDonald won't be happy about that!
Sweeny pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.

Sweeny fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. McDonald sprawls well initially but Sweeny persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Sweeny is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

McDonald looks like he's trying to stand up.
Sweeny lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
McDonald is breathing heavily.

McDonald tries to hold on but Sweeny pushes him away.
Sweeny has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of McDonald's face.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sweeny content just to control the position here.
Sweeny lands with some vicious ground and pound - can McDonald hang on?
