PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Alex Maser (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Chris Weidman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Weidman has chosen Alab ng Puso-Abra as his entrance music. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Alex Maser!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Chris Weidman!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Ryoma Takatsuka and Chris Saunders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Weidman throws a leg kick that is checked
and Maser counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.
Horrible takedown by Weidman or perhaps it was just good defense by Maser which made him look bad.
Weidman throws a head kick that misses.
Weidman shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Maser shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Weidman is trying to defend but Maser finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Weidman is refusing to be controlled, as Maser sits in half guard.
Weidman moves into full guard.
Maser throwing strikes but missing.
Weidman is trying to keep Maser in close.

Weidman throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.

Weidman is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Weidman wants to stand and escape but Maser is having none of it.

Maser decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Maser is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Weidman fails to pull the fight into his guard.

Maser goes for a takedown attempt but Weidman pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Maser tries for a takedown but Weidman sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Maser leaves Weidman with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Maser tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Weidman manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Maser fails with a takedown attempt.
Weidman shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Maser sprawls well. Maser wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Weidman gets slowly back to his feet.

Weidman keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Weidman throws a jab when Maser was well out of range.

Weidman closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Maser quickly recovers to half guard.

Weidman decides to return to a standing position.
Weidman steps to his left, right into the path of a big body kick from Maser. That one must have hurt.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Weidman throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Maser was covering up waiting for the punch and Weidman finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Maser is breathing heavily.
Weidman controlling from the top position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Chris Weidman will probably get the nod.

Weidman circles away from the clinch attempt.
Maser tries to clinch but Weidman is having none of it.
Weidman fails in his attempt to clinch.
Weidman tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Maser paws at him with a jab and circles away.
The fight stays on the outside here - Maser looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Weidman tries to score a power double leg takedown but Maser sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Weidman somewhat.
Weidman stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Weidman wants it to stay on the feet.
Maser is looking to clinch.
Weidman swats away the attempt to clinch by Maser.
Alex Maser seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Maser throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Weidman stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.

Weidman bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Weidman tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.
Maser tries to buck Weidman off but Weidman is having none of it.

Maser bucks up and tries to throw Weidman off but instead Weidman has got his back!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Maser defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of Weidman's arms.
Weidman is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.

Weidman landing with strikes.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Weidman is punishing Maser with some ground and pound.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Chris Weidman showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Maser wants to clinch up but Weidman keeps it at a distance.
Maser throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Weidman.
Weidman tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

and Weidman decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Maser's guard.
Weidman lands a couple of digs.
Maser looking to hit a scissor sweep but Weidman is one step ahead there.

Maser is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Maser can't keep his opponent in guard - Weidman advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Weidman looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Weidman slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Maser escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Weidman gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Weidman is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Weidman is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Alex Maser has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Chris Weidman is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

Maser looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Weidman passes into half guard.

Chris Weidman comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Weidman winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
