PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Sterling Slater (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Big Bob (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the heavyweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Sterling Slater!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Big Bob!
The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Robert Douchet and Trevor Gratis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Slater shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Slater was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
The ground and pound from Slater seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.

Slater looks up at the clock and then as Bob takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Slater smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
Bob has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it.

Bob is trying to improve his position.
Slater misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Slater just content to control the position.
Bob takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Slater creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Bob sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Slater is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Bob is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Bob tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Slater wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
We've been hearing that Slater has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.
The ground and pound from Slater seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Slater misses with the ground and pound.
Bob wants to control but Slater postures up.
Bob is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Slater's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Slater trying to control from half guard but Bob is working away.
Slater not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Slater seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Bob does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Slater tries to pass to full mount but Bob defends it.
Bob keeping hold of Slater's head, controlling as best he can.
Slater thows a huge punch but Bob dodges it nicely.
Slater not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Slater wants to get back to his feet.
Bob gets full guard.
Slater trying to control but Bob is working from the bottom.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Bob not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Bob looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Slater controlling from the top position.
Bob is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Bob lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Slater has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Slater and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.
Bob throws the kick towards the body but Slater avoids it.
A good leg kick by Bob.
Bob lands with a thumping leg kick.
Big Bob is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Bob is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Bob is looking for a sweep.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The strikes coming from Slater are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
Bob tries to improve position but can't.
Bob gets back to half guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Slater is looking to take a break and control but Bob is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Slater is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Bob sees it coming and defends easily.
Slater thows a huge punch but Bob dodges it nicely.
Slater throwing shots but Bob is blocking nicely.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Bob gets full guard.
Slater with a flurry of punches that miss.
Slater throws a big elbow that misses.
Slater missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Sterling Slater dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Bob connects with a leg kick. Slater looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.

Slater closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Bob works his way to full guard. Good work.
Slater pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Bob is keeping the position for now.

Bob is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Slater has his hands clasped together but Bob extends and breaks Slater's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Bob.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:33 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Big Bob!
Big Bob is the new heavyweight champion!
An out of breath Big Bob thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
