The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Downs just misses with a punch to the body.
Guy Downs seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Downs throws a shot from downtown. Hawk moves away and avoids it.

Downs shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Downs showed some decent athleticism there.
Downs thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Hawk's head.
Downs tries to pass the half guard into mount. Hawk knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Downs tries to stand but his arm is trapped.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Downs is just content to waste time from the top position. Hawk takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
Hawk is trying to keep Downs in close.
Downs might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Downs trying to control but Hawk is working from the bottom.
Hawk is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.
Hawk moves away from the strike by Downs.
Downs throws a hook to the side of Hawk's head but Hawk sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Downs tries to close the distance and clinch but Hawk swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Downs drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Hawk is looking for a sweep.
Hawk gets back to half guard.
Downs trying to mount his opponent but Hawk defends it.

Downs looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Hawk moves into full guard.

Hawk working for a triangle but Downs defends it easily.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Downs stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Downs shoots in but Hawk avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Downs throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Downs throws a series of punches but Hawk avoids them all with ease.
Hawk tries for a takedown but Downs circles away easily
and Downs connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Downs misses with a series of wild punches.
Hawk fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Downs throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Downs throws out a loose jab but Hawk uses good head movement to avoid it.
Hawk shoots in but no luck this time.
Guy Downs has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mike Hawk.
Downs scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Hawk doesn't seem bothered though.
Downs throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Downs darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Hawk is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Downs's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Downs's back!

Hawk is working hard for the rear naked choke here.
Hawk keeps control of the position as Downs tries to break free.

Hawk throwing strikes from the back - he gets a warning from the referee for striking the back of the head but all these shots are hurting Downs!

Downs is breathing heavily.
Downs covers up after taking a massive shot to the side of the head.
Hawk avoiding Downs 's attempts to control his hands.
Downs takes a big shot to the side of the head.

Downs defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of Hawk's arms.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Downs staying busy and making it hard for Hawk to control.
Downs wants to escape the position.
Hawk throwing sloppy strikes.
Hawk is trying to stick to Downs's back but Downs is turning into Hawk. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Hawk's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Downs.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Guy Downs will probably get the nod.

Downs shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Hawk's guard.
Downs won't allow Hawk to sweep him here.

Hawk is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Hawk pulls Downs in close to prevent any damage.
Downs throwing strikes but missing.
Hawk is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Downs wants to control but Hawk passes into side.
Downs is looking for a sweep.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Downs is not content to let Hawk control the position.

Hawk is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Downs has escaped the position, nice work there.

Hawk working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Downs prevents Hawk from moving into mount.
Downs is looking to reverse the position.
Downs is working hard here to advance position.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

and Hawk counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Downs trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
Hawk trying to control the position from guard on top but Downs is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Downs wants to stand up but Hawk is controlling him.
Hawk forces his way into half guard.
Hawk seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Downs is looking to get back to is feet but Hawk passes into side control.
Hawk wants to lay and pray for a moment but Downs keeps working.
Downs tries to control the position but he's not in luck - Hawk easily slips into full mount!

Hawk working for a submission here. He's tucked his head under his opponent's arm, looking for an arm triangle. He's hopped off into side control, looking to tighten the submission... is it going to work? He's given up a good position looking for it. Downs looks OK. Oh, I spoke too soon, he's out! That must have been tighter than I thought! Excellent work there by Hawk! Submission of the night perhaps?
