PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Leandro Alves (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Cody Grant (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Alves comes to the cage accompanied by Thin Lizzy - Angel of Death. Grant comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Alice in Chains - Rooster kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Cody Grant has the eye of the tiger tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 26 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Leandro Alves!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 22 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Cody Grant!
The judges for this bout are Alec Ball, Elvis Blanc and Robert Douchet.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Grant throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Alves on the side of the head.
A jab from Alves finds it's way through Grant's defenses.
Alves looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.

Alves closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Grant quickly recovers to half guard.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Alves wants to pass the guard but Grant is defending well.
Grant felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
Alves thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Alves is keen to just control but Grant is a slippery customer.

Alves is working for a kimura but Grant is defending it quite comfortably.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Alves looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Alves is looking for a kimura but Grant is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Alves to get the leverage.

Alves seems to be working for a kimura but Grant defends the submission attempt.

Grant has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Alves is on him like a limpet, forcing Grant back against the cage.

Grant tries to land a knee to the head but misses.
Grant landing knees to the body. They look like they could hurt.

Alves doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Alves drops down looking for an ankle pick but Grant pulls his leg out and moves away.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Grant wants to clinch up but Alves keeps it at a distance.
Grant is looking to clinch but Alves is avoiding it.
Grant tries to clinch up.
Alves fails with the takedown.
Alves tries a low kick but Grant avoids it.
Grant tries to clinch up but Alves circles away and keeps his distance.

Alves closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Alves trying to control the action but Grant is working from the bottom.
Grant avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Alves.
Alves throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Alves is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Grant defends it well.

Alves is working for a submission of some sort.
Grant is refusing to be controlled, as Alves sits in half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Alves is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Alves stops Grant from getting back to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Leandro Alves dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Alves works Grant's body with a nice hook.
Alves tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Grant swivels and escapes.
Grant throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Alves attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.
Alves connects with a body shot that sends Grant's belly button to the back.
Grant fails with an attempt to clinch.
Grant lands with an uppercut that bounces Alves off the cage and back into range.
Alves misses the shot to the body.
Grant lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.

Grant closes the distance and pushes Alves back into the cage.
Grant lands a knee to the head.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Grant missing with knees to the body.
Alves tries for a takedown but Grant manages to get underhooks.
Grant tries to land knees in the clinch but Alves avoids the damage to the body.
Grant with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.

Grant drops Alves with a big knee straight up the middle! Alves is covering up against the cage but manages to escape and gets back to his feet!


Alves is rocked!


It looks like Leandro Alves has been cut.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Grant jabs Alves to the body, keeping him at a distance.
Oh Alves is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Alves takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Cody Grant is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Grant rushes Alves and presses him up against the cage.
Alves tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Grant's elbow.
Grant crunches a lovely knee into Alves's ribcage.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Grant has Alves pressed up against the cage in a tight Thai clinch. Alves is arching his back, trying to avoid the knees but a big one sneaks through from Grant - that's hurt Alves badly! Oh, another knee lands and Alves is covering up! The referee steps in to save him - possibly a bit early but Alves doesn't seem to be complaining.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:24 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Knees). Cody Grant!
Cody Grant decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
Leandro Alves spoke after the fight, saying 'welcome to the downward spiral.'.
