PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Aaron Johnston (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Altair Hammeneus (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Altair Hammeneus will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Aaron Johnston!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of London, Altair Hammeneus!
The judges for this bout are Andrew Berry, Steven Brown and Daniel Bishop.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A slow jab from Hammeneus misses its intended target.
Hammeneus lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Johnston circles away quickly and effectively.
Hammeneus swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Johnston is looking to clinch.
Hammeneus punishes Johnston's body with a nice straight punch.
Hammeneus with a jab.
Hammeneus stuns Johnston with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.
Johnston shoots in for a takedown but Hammeneus shows good takedown defense.
A looping hook to the body misses from Hammeneus. Johnston does a little dance to reset his feet.

Johnston drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Johnston stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Hammeneus connects with a single shot there.
Johnston misses with an attempted mid kick.
Hammeneus swats away the attempt to clinch by Johnston.
Hammeneus slaps away a takedown attempt from Johnston, before circling back to the center of the mat.

Johnston has managed to clinch.

Johnston manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Johnston bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Hammeneus's guard.
Johnston stays in close to Hammeneus's body and controls the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Johnston passes Hammeneus's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

Hammeneus tries to escape but Johnston is in control.

Johnston decides to stand back up.
Hammeneus leaves Johnston with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Aaron Johnston. That's going to take a lot out of him.
The crowd cheers as Hammeneus lands an impressive looking overhand right. Johnston doesn't seem phased though.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Johnston tries to clinch but Hammeneus is having none of it.

Hammeneus connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.
Altair Hammeneus seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Johnston fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Hammeneus, pushing him back against the cage.
Johnston has Hammeneus pressed against the cage.

Hammeneus is trying to break the clinch but Johnston has him pressed against the cage.

Hammeneus breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Hammeneus jabs Johnston to the body, keeping him at a distance.
Johnston gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Hammeneus lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
Johnston uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Hammeneus.
Hammeneus moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
A combination from Hammeneus does no damage.
Hammeneus looks winded!
Hammeneus throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Johnston shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Johnston misses with a head kick.

Johnston gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Johnston slows down the pace here.

Johnston wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Hammeneus is trying to break the clinch but Johnston is controlling him.
Hammeneus tries to break the clinch but Johnston is controlling the position.
Hammeneus looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Johnston lands a nice uppercut.

Johnston decides to pull guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Johnston is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Hammeneus is aware though and is defending well.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Johnston manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Johnston has Hammeneus pressed against the cage, preventing Hammeneus from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Johnston's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Johnston fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Hammeneus scores with a hook to the body. Johnston takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Hammeneus lands a nice shot to the body.
Hammeneus misses with a series of wild punches.
Johnston shoots in but Hammeneus avoids the takedown attempt easily.
A nice combination there by Hammeneus.
Hammeneus tries to bum rush Johnston with a series of wild strikes but Johnston uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Johnston throws a big shot that misses.
Hammeneus connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
Hammeneus lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Johnston backs up against the cage.

Hammeneus tries to sprawl but Johnston drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Hammeneus is in trouble now - Johnston has advanced to mount!
Hammeneus is breathing heavily.
Johnston controlling the pace for now.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Johnston has hold of Hammeneus's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Hammeneus manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Hammeneus really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Johnston. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Johnston sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!

Johnston with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.

Johnston jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Hammeneus manages to avoid the submission attempt.
Johnston passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Hammeneus!
Hammeneus is trying to stand but he's not in a good position to be doing that! Johnston has taken his back!

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Johnston is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Hammeneus takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Johnston tries for a takedown but Hammeneus sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Hammeneus lands a nice hook to Johnston's body. Johnston takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.

Johnston looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Hammeneus!

Johnston fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Johnston get's back to his feet.
A swing and a miss from Hammeneus.

Johnston feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Johnston stays in close to Hammeneus's body and controls the position.
Aaron Johnston overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Hammeneus is working an open guard so Johnston takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Altair Hammeneus seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Johnston throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Hammeneus was covering up waiting for the punch and Johnston finishes the takedown easily into guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Johnston loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Hammeneus can't keep his opponent in guard - Johnston advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Johnston in particular looking to stall.
Johnston's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Johnston, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
