PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Masters Max (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ring Dong (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Max comes to the cage accompanied by Cypress Hill - Insane In The Membrane. The crowd seem to be enjoying Dong's choice of entrance music: Pantera-Walk. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Masters Max!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Ring Dong!
The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Thiago Cunha and Alexandre Firmino.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Max tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Dong swivels and escapes.
Dong keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Dong shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Max's guard.
Max is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Dong advances to half guard.

Dong is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Dong is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Dong is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Max doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Dong.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Max desperately trying to maintain half guard.

Dong is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Max doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Dong.

Dong is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.
Max lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Dong!

Max manages to capitalize on a mistake by Dong to take his back!

Max has the hooks in. Dong is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.
Dong covers up after taking a massive shot to the side of the head.
Dong tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!

Max wants to control the pace but Dong is squirming around nicely.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Max throws some wild stikes that Dong manages to avoid easily.
Dong is squirming around, avoiding Max's attempts to control the action.
Poor strikes thrown by Max there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!

Max stands up from mount. Strange move.
Max lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Dong steps to his left, right into the path of a big body kick from Max. That one must have hurt.

Max instigates a clinch.
Dong tries for a takedown but Max manages to get underhooks.

Max is looking to control Dong's arms but Dong gets an underhook and turns him. Now Max has his back to the cage.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Masters Max. That's going to take a lot out of him.

and Max counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Dong is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Masters Max dominated that round.

Max gets to his feet. Dong looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Max is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Max wants to get back to his feet but Dong is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Dong drops back looking for a leg! Max is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Max manages to kick Dong off! Dong jumps back into Max's guard.

Dong thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Dong advances to full mount.
Dong working away from the top, dropping strikes.
Max really trying hard to get back to half guard here.

Dong looking for a guillotine from mount but Max is having none of it.

Dong has hold of Max's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Max manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Max tries to lock up and control but Dong gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Dong jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Max is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Max and Dong has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

Ring Dong showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! And we move into the final round!



Max moves into range and clinches up with Dong.
Dong tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Max just stands there and leans against the cage.

Dong is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Max can't fight it off and eventually Dong manages to take the fight to the floor. Max looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Dong is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Max tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Max is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Dong advances position into side control!

Dong thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Max tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Dong wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Max can't do much from the bottom here.

Dong wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Max, who protects the arm well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Dong thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Dong advances nicely into full mount.
Max is looking to improve his position but Dong isn't that keen on the idea.
Max has given up his back here. Will Dong look for the submission or keep pounding away?
Dong keeps control of the position as Max tries to break free.
Dong cracks Max with a big shot to body and one to the head - really punishing Max from the back mount here, looking to soften him up.

Max defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of Dong's arms.

Dong is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Max is defending well though. Dong let's go of the attempt for now.
I really don't envy Max right now.
The referee is taking a good look at Max as he is on the wrong end of some big shots from Dong!

Dong is remaining active here, looking for the choke. The more discerning members of the crowd will appreciate his efforts.
Max just trying to survive but Dong is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish.

This has been an exciting period of action!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Dong is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Max defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.

And that's the end of the fight!
Ring Dong comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Dong has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
