PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Shael Connen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jimmy Pistol (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jimmy Pistol will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 6 - 0, fighting out of London, Shael Connen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 6 - 0, fighting out of London, Jimmy Pistol!
The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, Sam Margolis and James Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Connen drives through with a takedown into Pistol's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Connen advances position into side control!
Connen wants to stand but Pistol is controlling his arm.
Pistol takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Pistol wants to control but Connen postures up.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
Connen landing strikes.
Connen cracks Pistol with a big right hand but Pistol just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Connen working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
You can see the frustration on Pistol's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Pistol is looking to regain half guard here but Connen keeps moving and retains side control.
Connen scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Pistol to see if he's OK.
Pistol manages to get back to half guard.

Connen seems to be working for a kimura but Pistol defends the submission attempt.

Pistol is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Connen pulls his head out easily.

Connen decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.
Connen looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Jimmy Pistol seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Pistol tries to close the distance and clinch but Connen swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Connen shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Connen slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Pistol has his foot on Connen's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Connen works his way back into a safe position though.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Connen avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Pistol working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Connen doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Connen manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Pistol looks winded!
Connen working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Pistol's head.
Connen passes easily into side control. Nice work.

Connen decides to stand up, so the ref orders Pistol to his feet.
Pistol fails in his attempt to clinch.

Connen closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Pistol quickly recovers to half guard.
Connen is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Pistol is trying to maintain the position but Connen is very close to passing his half guard.

Connen is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
Pistol wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back.

Connen working for a choke but Pistol is defending well.

Connen working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet.

Pistol is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.
Pistol is trying to break free.

Connen doesn't have the hooks in and Pistol manages to turn into his guard.
Pistol prevents Connen from getting back to his feet.
My spies in London MMA Fight Academy inform me that Pistol has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!
This has been an exciting period of action!
Pistol working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Pistol has gone for a leg lock! Connen slips out almost immediately though and dives into Pistol's guard.
Connen working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Pistol's head.
Connen will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Connen got a little sloppy there for a moment and Pistol has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Connen has managed to get both his arms back between Pistol's legs - danger averted.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Pistol looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Connen has picked Pistol up and slammed him! Pistol can't keep hold of the triangle and Connen manages to pass to side control!

Connen tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Connen has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Pistol is trying to escape the position but Connen is controlling the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Shael Connen dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Pistol tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Connen was well out of range. Poor timing from Pistol.
Pistol tries to clinch but Connen is having none of it.
Pistol is looking to clinch.
Connen misses with a two punch combination.
Pistol tries to clinch up but Connen circles away and keeps his distance.

Connen looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Pistol!
Pistol wants to control but Connen postures up.
Pistol is trying to get back to half guard.
Pistol is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
Connen scoring with punches and elbows.
Pistol is trying to improve his position.

Pistol is breathing heavily.

Connen cracks Pistol with a big right hand but Pistol just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Pistol is working to avoid the ground and pound but Connen connects with a decent elbow.

Pistol tries to bench press Connen off him but Connen keeps the position.
Pistol takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.

Connen decides to stand back up. Connen steps back and let's Pistol get back to his feet.
Pistol tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Connen manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Connen throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Pistol.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!

Connen throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Pistol tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Connen is in Pistol's guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Pistol working a defensive guard but Connen passes into half guard.

Connen looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Pistol looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Connen lands with a punch from half guard.
Pistol trying to control here.

Connen moves into side control, avoiding a weak kimura attempt from Pistol.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
Connen seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Pistol for as long as he can get away with.
Pistol takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.

Connen is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Pistol knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Pistol tries to improve position but can't.

Connen thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Pistol is looking for a sweep.
Connen works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.

Connen is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Pistol knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Connen tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.
Pistol wants to control but Connen postures up.
Pistol tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Connen wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Connen is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Pistol has escaped the position, nice work there.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Connen landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Connen wants to stand up but Pistol is controlling the position.

Pistol is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Connen pulls his head out easily.

Connen is trying for a kimura here. Pistol looks like he's in a lot of pain... and he's tapping out! Connen wins by kimura!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:52 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Shael Connen!
Shael Connen gave a mention to Merciless Gladiators in his post fight interview. That will please them (and hopefully generate some sales).
