PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jared Cowen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Wayne Pearson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pearson has chosen tom petty - i won't back down as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jared Cowen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Wayne Pearson!
The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Colin Fray and Ryoma Takatsuka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cowen tries to clinch up.
Pearson scores with a jab to the body.
Cowen displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Pearson throws out the jab.
Pearson is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Cowen.
Cowen staying out of range there.
Cowen takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Pearson misses with a few strikes there.
A slow jab from Pearson misses its intended target.
Pearson shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Cowen eats them both and turns towards Pearson to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.

Cowen takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Pearson swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Pearson scores with a shot to the body.
Cowen lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.

Pearson throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Pearson throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Horrible takedown by Cowen or perhaps it was just good defense by Pearson which made him look bad.
Cowen takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Cowen moves away from the strike by Pearson.
Wayne Pearson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Pearson misses with a double jab
and Cowen counters with a head kick.
Pearson tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Cowen was well out of range. Poor timing from Pearson.
Cowen throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Pearson.


It looks like Wayne Pearson has been cut.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Cowen.
Pearson lands with a straight right. Cowen didn't see that one coming.

Pearson swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Pearson throws a hook to the side of Cowen's head but Cowen sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Wayne Pearson is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Pearson lands with a hook. Cowen tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
Cowen fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Pearson is out of range.
Cowen throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Pearson.
Pearson throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Pearson throws a hook but Cowen blocks it.
Pearson pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Cowen back to the cage. Pearson follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.

Cowen drives through with a takedown into guard.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Cowen sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Pearson's guard.

Cowen is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Cowen seems to be working for a kimura but Pearson defends the submission attempt.
Cowen will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Cowen stops Pearson from getting back to his feet.

Pearson is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Cowen.

Cowen jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Pearson walks away with a smile on his face. Cowen gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Pearson fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Cowen manages to avoid it.
Cowen wants to clinch up but Pearson keeps it at a distance.

Pearson rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Cowen moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Cowen lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.
Cowen takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Pearson moves out of range as Cowen strikes.

Cowen moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Pearson throws a hook but Cowen blocks it.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

and Cowen decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Pearson's guard.
Pearson is looking to stand up but Cowen isn't so interested in that idea.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Cowen drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Pearson dives on top into guard.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Cowen isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Pearson stacks Cowen on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Pearson!

A close second round but Wayne Pearson will probably get the nod - 10:9.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Cowen jabs away that one connects to the head of his opponent.
Pearson looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Cowen gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there.

Pearson changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.
Cowen tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Pearson swings for the body but Cowen moves out of range.

and Cowen counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

Cowen walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Pearson jabs Cowen to the body, keeping him at a distance.
Cowen ducks under a wild hook from Pearson.

and Cowen counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Pearson's guard now.

Cowen has gone for a leg lock! Pearson slips out almost immediately though and dives into Cowen's guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Cowen is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Cowen has an active guard here but Pearson has managed to pass into half guard.

Jared Cowen has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Pearson wants to get up but he can't break Cowen's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Cowen wants to sweep here but Pearson controlling him for the moment.

Cowen working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Pearson doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Pearson manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jared Cowen.
I think Pearson has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
