PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jason Shono (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lyndon Russell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Jason Shono!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Lyndon Russell!
The judges for this bout are Nard Betker, Albert Achterberg and Radbod Blank.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shono misses with a takedown attempt - Russell sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Shono is looking to land body kicks.
Shono fails with the takedown

and Russell holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Shono is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Russell is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Shono is defending well.
Shono has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Russell after a bit of a struggle.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jason Shono. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Russell is stalling here.

Russell jumps into guard, dragging Shono to the mat.
Russell has Shono pulled in close to control his posture.

Shono definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Russell has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

Russell manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Shono manages to get himself to full guard.
Russell engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
It looks like Russell might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Lyndon Russell wasn't active enough on the ground.
The fight stays on the outside here - Shono looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Russell throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Shono's waist but Shono gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Russell off to one side.

Shono has taken the fight to the clinch.
Shono jumps guard but Russell stands there with Shono around his waist. Shono gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Shono changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Russell fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Russell fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Shono manages to avoid it.
Russell misses with a leg kick.

Russell scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Shono on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.

Shono is refusing to be controlled, as Russell sits in half guard.

Shono looking for submissions off his back.
Shono pushes Russell off but Russell dives into side control.
Shono can't do much from the bottom here.
Russell cracks Shono with a big right hand but Shono just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.

Russell decides to stand up, so the ref orders Shono to his feet.

Russell shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Shono is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Russell passes Shono's left leg - he's now in half guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Shono wants to control but Russell passes into side.
Shono tries to get back to half guard but can't.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Shono is looking for a sweep.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Lyndon Russell dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Shono is letting Russell control him for a moment.

Russell is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Shono's shoulder. That is not cool.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Shono struggling a bit here.
Russell just content to control the position.

Lyndon Russell has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Russell closes the distance and clinches.
Shono jumps guard but Russell stands there with Shono around his waist. Shono gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Russell pulls guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Shono wants to control from the top but Russell keeps moving.
Shono looking to sit in guard and control but Russell gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Shono wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Russell is now in half guard.
Russell with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Shono trying to hold on to Russell's head to control him but Russell postures up.
Russell is taking a breather. Shono says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Let's hope that Russell has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Lyndon Russell.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Shono.

Russell closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Russell lands in his opponent's guard.

Lyndon Russell showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Russell takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Shono wants to sweep but Russell has passed to side control!

The ground and pound from Russell seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Shono knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Russell on the ground.

The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
Shono can't do much from the bottom here.
Russell in side control lands a decent elbow.

Russell looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Russell is looking to take a break and control but Shono is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Russell has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Russell lands a couple of good shots and Shono has given up his back, trying to escape the position!

Lyndon Russell comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Russell has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
