PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jake Souza (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dean Lister (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jake Souza!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Dean Lister!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Chris Downing and Alan Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lister lets loose with a powerful body kick. Souza will feel that in the morning.
No luck for Lister with that takedown attempt.
Lister tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Souza fails with a takedown attempt.
Dean Lister seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Lister is defended easily by Souza.
Souza tries to score a power double leg takedown but Lister sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Souza somewhat.
Souza shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Lister but Lister pushes him off and we're back to square one.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jake Souza. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Lister shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Souza manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Souza looking to hit a scissor sweep but Lister is one step ahead there.
Lister lands a couple of elbows.
Lister wants to pass the guard but Souza is keeping the position.

Souza looking for subs off his back but Lister has passed one foot through into half guard.
Souza regains full guard. Nicely done.

Souza is trying to keep Lister in close.

Souza working for a triangle but Lister defends it easily.
Souza is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Lister lands a couple of elbows.
Lister makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Souza escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Lister gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Lister cracks Souza with a solid left hand.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Lister throwing strikes but missing.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Lister being controlled here momentarily.
Lister throws a big elbow that misses.
Lister working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Souza's head.
Souza tries to land a sweep but no joy.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Lister tries to stand but Souza is controlling from the bottom.
Lister trying to control the position from guard on top but Souza is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Souza working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Lister doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Lister manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Lister distracts Souza with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

Souza looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Lister passes into side control.

Lister is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Souza has escaped the position, nice work there.
Souza is not in a great position here, taking some shots.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Souza tries to buck Lister off but Lister is having none of it.

Lister is trying to get an arm triangle but Souza is defending well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Dean Lister dominated that round.
That's time! Souza's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Lister misses with a head kick.
Lister is looking to clinch but Souza is avoiding it.
Souza lands a jab.
Souza fails with a takedown attempt.

Lister throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Souza tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Lister is in Souza's guard.
Lister tries to stand but Souza is controlling from the bottom.
Souza tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Lister looking to sit in guard and control but Souza gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Souza lands a couple of elbows.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Souza throws a big elbow that misses.
Lister wants to sweep but no luck.

Lister throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Souza sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Lister's guard.
Souza wants to control but Lister is keeping him busy.
Souza wants to pass to mount but Lister is defending the position.
Souza is working hard here to advance position.

Souza takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Souza looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Souza is looking to take a break and control but Lister is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Souza is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Lister is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Souza missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Souza thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Lister's head.
Lister is looking to improve his position.
Lister tries to kick Souza off but Souza keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

Souza working the head and body with strikes.
Souza missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Souza tries to pass the half guard into mount. Lister knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Lister is trying to stand up here but Souza is controlling him well.
Souza not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Souza is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Souza wants to free his trapped foot but Lister is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Souza is looking to take a break and control but Lister is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Lister wants to get back to his feet.
Jake Souza overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Souza looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Lister with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Lister looks like he's trying to stand up.
Lister wants to control but Souza is keeping busy.
Lister is trying to stand back up but Souza is controlling him
Lister is breathing heavily.
Souza lands with a punch from half guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Souza is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Lister has managed to free his arm - good work.

Souza is looking for submissions but instead, Lister has regained full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jake Souza dominated that second round.
That's time! Souza's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


A telegraphed takedown attempt from Lister is defended easily by Souza.

Lister shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Souza napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Souza is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Lister's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.

Lister maintaining the dominant position here and is working for a kimura. He's locked it up! Souza could be in real trouble here! He's trying to wriggle out but Lister has cracked it and Souza is screaming in pain - he's tapped out! Great finish by Lister!

A pretty intense looking Dean Lister took the opportunity post-fight to ask for a shot at the title.
