PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Kim Jong Un (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Chael Connell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jong Un kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is North Korea National anthem. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Kim Jong Un!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Chael Connell!
The judges for this bout are Aleksandr Martynov, Dmitry Maklakov and Fedor Mirinova.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Connell fails to land with a series of punches.

Connell moves into the clinch.

Connell drags the fight down to the ground.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Jong Un won't allow Connell to sweep him here.
Connell trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!

Connell is pulling down on Jong Un's head. It's preventing any offense from Jong Un, at least for the moment.

Connell has his feet on Jong Un's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.

Jong Un stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Jong Un wants it to stay on the feet.
Jong Un misses with a two punch combination.
Connell throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.
Jong Un misses with a series of wild punches.
Connell fails with a takedown attempt.

and Connell counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Jong Un looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

Kim Jong Un seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Connell tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Jong Un was well out of range. Poor timing from Connell.

Connell closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Jong Un's guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Connell stands up and waves to Jong Un to follow him.

Jong Un is breathing heavily.

Connell breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Connell forces Jong Un back against the cage and clinches.

Connell jumps guard and drags Jong Un to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Connell has his feet on Jong Un's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
Jong Un tries for a takedown but Connell sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Jong Un walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Connell turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.

Connell shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Connell is pushing down on Jong Un's leg trying to pass to half guard. Jong Un is fighting to maintain full guard but Connell has managed to sneak the leg through.
Connell is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Connell moves nicely into side control.

Connell throws an elbow but Jong Un slips to the side and avoids it well.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Connell is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Jong Un's shoulder. That is not cool.

Connell looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Connell in side control, just content to control the action for now.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
It looks like Connell might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jong Un gets caught napping as Connell dives in and scores a takedown. Jong Un manages to retain guard.

Jong Un knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Connell on the ground.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Chael Connell was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Jong Un will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Jong Un gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Connell's corner is telling him to maintain position.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Chael Connell hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Connell throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Jong Un's head.
Jong Un misses with a combination

and Connell moves into the clinch.

Connell is trying to trip Jong Un. He has hold of a leg but Jong Un is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Connell persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Connell slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Connell gets to his feet - Jong Un follows without any prompting.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Jong Un misses with the combination.
Jong Un fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Connell.
Connell has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Connell stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Jong Un takes a head kick and keeps coming.

Jong Un misses with a double jab

and Connell counters with a nice double leg into guard.


Jong Un is rocked!

Connell is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Connell decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Jong Un, up you get!

Connell moves into the clinch.
Jong Un tries to break the clinch but Connell is controlling the position.
Jong Un is defending well against a takedown attempt.

Connell breaks the clinch.

Connell drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Connell controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Chael Connell hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Connell shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Still in half guard, Connell seems content to control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Chael Connell showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Connell is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Connell gets to his feet. Jong Un looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Jong Un throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Connell.

and Connell counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Connell.

The referee asks Connell politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Connell prefers to stall for the moment though.

Connell sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!
Poor strikes thrown by Connell there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!

Connell stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet.

Connell closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Connell seems to be looking for submissions.

Connell wants to work for an arm triangle but Jong Un is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Connell not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Kim Jong Un has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Chael Connell comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Connell has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Chael Connell really struggled to get his t-shirt on before his hand was raised. Making sure that Rhino logo gets some air time is pretty tricky when you're all sweaty.
