PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between David Cross (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Connor (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cross's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, The American Dream Song. Connor has chosen Ça vaut mieux que d'attraper la scarlatine by Ray Venture as his entrance music. Both fighters really staring each other down here, as John Connor enters the cage!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 35 - 13 - 2, fighting out of New York, David Cross!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 30 - 23 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, John Connor!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Alec Ball and Gregory Folan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cross jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Connor throws an overhand right that lands on Cross's shoulder, as Cross tries to avoid the shot.
Cross connects with a jab.

Connor darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Connor prevents Cross from improving his position.
Connor is pressing down on Cross's thigh, looking to free his foot. Cross is holding on for now.
Cross is trying to maintain the position but Connor is very close to passing his half guard.
Connor wants to control but Cross is keeping him busy.

Cross is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Connor pulls his head out easily.
Cross is trying to get back to full guard.
Connor tries to pass to full mount but Cross defends it.
Cross has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Connor is working away from the top position though.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Connor wants to pass to mount but Cross is defending the position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Connor is taking a breather. Cross says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Connor not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Cross is trying to control but can't.

Cross looking for submissions off his back.
Connor looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Connor is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Connor working over Cross with some ground and pound. Cross looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Connor is trying to control the action in half guard but Cross is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Cross trying to hold on to Connor's head to control him but Connor postures up.

The fighters are battling for position here. Cross manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Cross is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Cross looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Cross not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Connor tries to free his leg and advance position but Cross is retaining full guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Connor drops back, looking for a kneebar! Cross looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Cross looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Cross!
Connor is trying to control Cross's posture but Cross avoids it.
Cross working the head and body with strikes.
Cross is putting a hurting on Connor here, landing some big shots from side control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Connor is looking for a sweep.
Cross cracks Connor with a big right hand but Connor just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
Connor is trying to get back to half guard.
Check out the look on Cross's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
Cross scoring with punches from side control.
Cross lands a decent elbow from side control.
What's Connor going to do here then? He's in a bit of a pickle.
Cross will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Cross creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Connor sneaks back into half guard.
Connor is controlling Cross's trapped leg to prevent Cross from advancing to side control.
Cross sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Connor defending well though.

Cross is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Connor is not content to let Cross control the position.
Connor tries to roll over but Cross keeps him under control.
Ground and pound from Cross.
Cross seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Connor does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Connor is looking for a sweep. Cross is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Cross performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Connor is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Cross tries to pass to full mount but Connor defends it.

Connor looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

David Cross dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Cross manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Connor on his heels. He'll look to pass Connor's guard now, I'm sure.
Connor is trying to control the position but Cross postures up.
David Cross overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Connor is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Connor wants to lay and pray for a moment but Cross keeps working.
Cross has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Cross moves into full guard.
Connor wants to control from the top but Cross keeps moving.
Cross tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Cross has Connor pulled in close to control his posture.

Cross is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Connor is aware though and is defending well.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Cross controls Connor momentarily but Connor frees himself.
Cross keeping moving, preventing Connor from controlling successfully.
Connor seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by John Connor.
Connor looks to land a right hand but Cross moved out of range.
Cross bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Connor's head backwards.
Connor shoots and misses
and Cross counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Cross drops his hands momentarily and Connor takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Connor doesn't manage to clinch there - Cross circles away.
Connor tries to close the distance and clinch but Cross swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Cross connects with a solid leg kick.
Connor fails with an attempt to clinch.
Connor uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Cross.
John Connor is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Cross fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Connor manages to avoid it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Cross ducks right into an uppercut from Connor.
The fighters circling - Connor throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Connor takes a jab right on the kisser.


It looks like John Connor has been cut.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Connor doesn't manage to clinch there - Cross circles away.
Connor tries to bum rush Cross with a series of wild strikes but Cross uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Connor fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Connor looks to land a right hand but Cross moved out of range.
Connor is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Cross scores with a punch to the head.
Connor misses with a takedown

and Cross counters with a leg kick then a big left hand that sends Connor down! Cross is looking to finish but Connor is intelligently defending himself.


Connor is rocked!
Cross postures up from his opponent's guard, before exploding into some vicious ground and pound! Connor covers up, he's hurt! Cross keeps throwing the strikes, glancing at the referee... Will he stop it?? One more big shot from Cross and the ref steps in to end the fight! Cross can't hide his delight as he celebrates with his corner.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:59 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). David Cross!
