PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jean Pierre Pongolle (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Josh Michaels (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jean Pierre Pongolle!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Josh Michaels!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Dillan Fox and Gregory Folan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pongolle shoots in but Michaels avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Michaels throws a right hand that Pongolle ducks under and follows up with a left that Pongolle also avoids with ease.

Pongolle looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Pongolle trying to control the position from guard on top but Michaels is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Pongolle lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Michaels keeping moving, preventing Pongolle from controlling successfully.
Pongolle slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Pongolle decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Michaels, up you get!

Pongolle fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Michaels sprawls well initially but Pongolle persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Pongolle throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Pongolle seems to be working for a kimura but Michaels defends the submission attempt.

Pongolle is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Michaels doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Pongolle.
Pongolle is looking to take a break and control but Michaels is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Pongolle is looking for a kimura but Michaels is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Pongolle to get the leverage.

Pongolle is keen to just control but Michaels is a slippery customer.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Pongolle lands a nice short elbow.

Pongolle is trying to work for a kimura but Michaels is defending well.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Michaels can do anything to dispel that myth.
Pongolle is controlling the pace.

Pongolle prevents Michaels from standing back up.
Pongolle throwing shots but Michaels is blocking nicely.

Pongolle wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Michaels, who protects the arm well.
Pongolle wants to control but Michaels is keeping him busy.
Michaels tries to bench press Pongolle off him but Pongolle keeps the position.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Pongolle goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Michaels has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Pongolle but great work by Michaels.

Michaels working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Michaels throws a series of punches but Pongolle avoids them all with ease.
Pongolle tries to clinch but fails miserably
and Michaels counters with a straight right hand.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Pongolle.
Michaels is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.
Pongolle tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Michaels swivels and escapes.

Pongolle closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Michaels's guard.
Jean Pierre Pongolle overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Pongolle stands and steps away. Michaels gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
A left and a right from Michaels both land. Nice combination.
Michaels is breathing heavily.

Pongolle looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Michaels is fending him off so far but Pongolle persists. Nope, Michaels circles away and we're back to standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jean Pierre Pongolle. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Pongolle drops his hands momentarily and Michaels takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.

Michaels jabs Pongolle to the body, keeping him at a distance.
Pongolle doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Michaels counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

Pongolle shoots in looking for a takedown. Michaels tries to sprawl out of it but Pongolle keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Michaels manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Nice jab there from Michaels.

Pongolle fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Josh Michaels is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Michaels stuns Pongolle with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Michaels swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Pongolle.
Pongolle with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Michaels to score with a decent uppercut.
Michaels stalks Pongolle and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Pongolle's face. Pongolle staggers backwards, shaken.


Pongolle is rocked!
