PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Thiago Pereira (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Roger Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Thiago Pereira!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Roger Gracie!
The judges for this bout are Luis Engracia, Emerson Jorge and Leandro Rodrigues.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pereira misses with a wild combination.

Gracie closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Pereira is letting Gracie control him for a moment.
Gracie's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Roger Gracie.
Pereira shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Gracie throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Pereira tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Gracie is in Pereira's guard.
Gracie engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Pereira has momentary wrist control but Gracie slips an elbow through the middle.
Gracie working some strikes from top position.
Gracie slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Let's hope that Gracie has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Pereira isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Gracie stacks Pereira on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Gracie!
Pereira could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Gracie cracks Pereira with an elbow. That is naaassty.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
The referee asks Gracie politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Gracie prefers to stall for the moment though.
Gracie grinds an elbow into Pereira's temple.
Gracie controls the position.
Gracie has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Gracie has hold of Pereira's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Pereira tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Gracie cranks the arm and Pereira screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Pereira, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:24 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Roger Gracie!
