PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Daniel McDermott (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Boris Mata (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Daniel McDermott!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Boris Mata!
The judges for this bout are Paulo Santos, Emerson Jorge and Luis Engracia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McDermott swats away the attempt to clinch by Mata.

Mata throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around McDermott's waist but McDermott gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Mata off to one side.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Mata is looking to regain half guard here but McDermott keeps moving and retains side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Mata wants to control but McDermott postures up.
McDermott is looking to take a break and control but Mata is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The referee asks McDermott politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. McDermott prefers to stall for the moment though.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

McDermott has his hands clasped together around Mata's back. He's all about the action.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

McDermott kicks Mata off and gets back to his feet.

McDermott is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

McDermott shoots in and bounces Mata off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

McDermott perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
McDermott looking to control but Mata is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
McDermott takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


McDermott changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Mata tries to avoid it but McDermott manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Mata to the ground. Mata escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Well McDermott has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
