PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Roy Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Ross (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ross has chosen Devils Den- Skrillex as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Roy Jones!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, John Ross!
The judges for this bout are , Frank Antenori and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jones shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Ross as he jumps to the side.

Roy Jones seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Ross gets tackled into the cage by Jones. Jones maintains the clinch.
Come on Ross - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Ross tries a knee to the head but Jones blocks it.
Jones tries to pull guard but Ross holds him up against the cage and eventually Jones drops back down to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Roy Jones. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Jones tries to circle away but Ross has him pinned against the cage.

Jones has had enough of the clinch but Ross keeps him there for the moment.
Ross will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Jones up against the cage.
Jones drops down looking for an ankle pick but Ross pulls his leg out and moves away.
Jones shoots in for a takedown but Ross shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Ross tries to clinch there but Jones circles away.

Ross gets a clinch.
Ross misses with the head strike.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Jones pushes off an throws an elbow but Ross leans to the side and avoids it. We're back to clinching against the cage.
Jones is trying to stall.
Jones is trying to break the clinch but Ross has him pressed against the cage.
Jones fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Jones working hard to break the clinch.
Jones jumps guard but Ross stands there with Jones around his waist. Jones gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Ross's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.
Ross is trying to maintain a safe position but Jones gets an underhook and turns Ross into the cage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Ross lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Jones backwards.
Ross blocks a body shot from Jones.
Ross is pressed up against the cage. Jones has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Ross down to the mat. Ross avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Jones throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Ross's waist but Ross gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Jones off to one side.

Ross rushes Jones and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Jones blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
Ross landing knees to the body. They look like they could hurt.
Jones is breathing heavily.
Ross misses with an elbow over the top.
Ross stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.
Jones looking to stall.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Jones is trying to break the clinch but Ross has him pressed against the cage.
Jones tries to pull guard but Ross won't allow it.
Ross with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.
Ross tries to land knees in the clinch but Jones avoids the damage to the body.
Jones blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Ross lands with a good tight uppercut to the head.
Jones misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Ross.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Jones drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Ross gets the underhooks and prevents it.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Ross dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

and Ross counters with a nice body kick.
Ross tries to clinch there but Jones circles away.
Jones tries a head kick but it misses.
Jones misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Jones closes the distance and clinches up with Ross, looking for a takedown. Jones pushes Ross against the cage but Ross circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Roy Jones. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Ross tries to close the distance and clinch up but Jones swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Ross will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Ross dives in and grabs Jones's left leg, looking for a takedown. Jones pushes down on Ross's head and hops out.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Ross throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Jones was covering up waiting for the punch and Ross finishes the takedown easily into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Ross throws a big elbow that misses.
Ross throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Jones works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Ross trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Ross with a flurry of punches that miss.
Ross scoring with punches to the head and body.
Ross distracts Jones with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Ross with a nice head shot there.
Ross works over Jones with some ground and pound from guard.
Ross stands up over Jones, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Jones can't keep his opponent in guard - Ross advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Ross is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Ross is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Jones trying to control here.
Ross looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Ross sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Jones defending well though.

Ross is trying to work for a kimura but Jones is defending well.
Ross winds up and cracks Jones with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

Ross not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

Ross is working for a kimura but Jones is defending it quite comfortably.
Jones gets back to full guard.
Jones working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Ross.

Ross distracts Jones with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Jones trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
Ross stops Jones from standing up.
Jones controls Ross momentarily but Ross frees himself.
Ross postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

Ross postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Jones is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Ross, into his guard.
Jones passes into half guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Ross showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

Jones keeps the fight on the outside.
Jones throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Ross's waist but Ross gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Jones off to one side.
Ross tries to close the distance and clinch but Jones swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Ross keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.

Ross stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Ross wants it to stay on the feet.

Ross swings wildly with an uppercut but Jones uses good head movement to avoid it.
The referee is keeping an eye on Ross - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
Ross keeps control of Jones as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Ross throws an elbow that misses.
John Ross seems to be working more effectively in the clinch in the fight so far.
Ross has Jones pushed against the cage.
John Ross is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Ross wants to stall.

The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Ross takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.

Ross keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Jones's efforts to push away.

Jones ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Jones no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
John Ross comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Ross has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

John Ross really struggled to get his t-shirt on before his hand was raised. Making sure that Dragon logo gets some air time is pretty tricky when you're all sweaty.
