PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Tommy Fire (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jake Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jake Smith will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 18 - 1, fighting out of New York, Tommy Fire!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 7 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jake Smith!
The judges for this bout are Dean Styles, John Roberts and Lou da Vinci.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Fire fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Smith fails to land with a series of punches.
Fire takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Smith moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
Smith fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Fire looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Some wild striking there from Smith.
Fire shoots in looking for a takedown but Smith manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Fire's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Smith lunges at Fire with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Fire's hand.
A good leg kick by Smith.
Smith lands a nice looking body shot.
Jab from Smith.
A left and a right from Smith both land. Nice combination.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Fire gets a takedown into half guard.
Smith moves into full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Fire preventing the sweep.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Fire throwing strikes but missing.
Fire has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Smith escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Fire gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Smith has control of Fire's left arm, preventing Fire from doing any damage.
Smith is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Smith wants to get back to his feet but Fire is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Tommy Fire just wasn't active enough.
Fire has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
Smith fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Fire takes a head kick and shrugs it off.
Smith pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Fire misses with a takedown attempt
and Smith counters with a low kick, right behind Fire 's knee.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Tommy Fire. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Smith throws a series of strikes that have Fire backpedaling.
Smith throws a right and a left that both miss.
Smith connects with a body shot that sends Fire's belly button to the back.
Fire tries for a takedown but Smith sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Smith lands a nice shot to the body.
Smith is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Fire rather than just go for the knockout.
Fire slips a jab and a cross from Smith.
Smith throws a series of punches but Fire avoids them all with ease.
Smith lands a head shot.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Smith swinging wildly here.
Smith throws a series of strikes that have Fire backpedaling.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Fire avoids the head kick by Smith.
Smith lands with a straight right. Fire didn't see that one coming.
Smith moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.

Fire decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Smith is trying is best to control the position here.
Smith trying to hold on to Fire's head to control him but Fire postures up.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Jake Smith hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Smith shoots in and bounces Fire off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Fire tries to land a sweep but no joy.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jake Smith dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Smith swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Fire closes the distance and clinches up with Smith, looking for a takedown. Fire pushes Smith against the cage but Smith circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Smith misses with a jab, cross combination.
Smith lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
A punch combination from Smith misses.
Fire with a poor takedown
enabling Smith to counter with a crisp jab.
Smith has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.

Smith feints and as Fire raises his hands in defense, Smith changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Smith trying to control but Fire is working from the bottom.

Smith wants to control from the top but Fire keeps moving.
Fire might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Smith working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

That's one minute gone in the round.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Smith with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Smith stands and throws Fire's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Smith is looking to take a break and control but Fire is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Smith is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Fire looks calm but he's in trouble here. Smith gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Fire is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Smith lets go of the hold and Fire can pop his arm back in it's socket.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:45 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Jake Smith!
Jake Smith spent the whole post fight interview bigging himself up. It didn't go down that well with the fans after a while as they thought it was a bit arrogant.
