PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Urijah Faber (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Stan Rivers (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Faber's entrance music is Choke - Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. A fine choice. Rivers is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Cyco Vision. Buckle up people - heeeeeeeeeere we go!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Urijah Faber!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 6 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Stan Rivers!
The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, Gregory Folan and Dillan Fox.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rivers misses with a straight left.
A head kick misses from Rivers.
Rivers misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Rivers connects with an inside leg kick.
A slow jab from Faber misses its intended target.
Rivers catches Faber with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!
Rivers misses with a two punch combination.
Faber dives in and grabs Rivers's left leg, looking for a takedown. Rivers pushes down on Faber's head and hops out.
Rivers lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Faber backs up against the cage.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Rivers ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Faber throws a lazy uppercut

and Rivers counters with a head kick that drops Faber to the mat! Faber scrambles across the canvas and gets back to his feet, still wobbly!


Faber is rocked!
This has been an exciting period of action!
Faber scores with a nice head shot.
Faber tries to close the distance and clinch up but Rivers swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Rivers lands a jab-cross combination.
Oh Faber is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!

Rivers shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Faber manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Faber seems to have got his legs back now.

Faber has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Rivers can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Faber looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Rivers would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Faber is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Rivers defends well.

Faber has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Rivers can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Rivers must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Stan Rivers dominated that round.
That's time! Faber's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Faber tries to close the distance and clinch but Rivers swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Faber lands the left hand.
Faber blocks a head kick by Rivers.
Faber misses with an uppercut
and Rivers counters with a straight right hand.
Rivers misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Faber.
Rivers lands a nice looking body kick.
Rivers closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Rivers throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Faber sees it coming and avoids it easily.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Rivers lands a big head kick that sends Faber tumbling to the mat! Rivers takes a step backwards and waves Faber back to his feet - he wants the finish!
Faber wants to land a leg kick but Rivers is out of range.
Stan Rivers seems to be getting the better of the standup.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Faber misses with a straight left.
Rivers slaps away a takedown attempt from Faber, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Faber lands a jab to the head.
Faber moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Rivers leaves Faber with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Rivers misses with a wild combination.
Faber cracks Rivers with a good jab.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.

Rivers decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Faber wants to improve his position but Rivers is controlling well.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Faber is working hard here to advance position.
Rivers really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Faber. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Rivers tries to stand but his arm is trapped.
Faber is trying to control but can't.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Rivers tries to stand but his hand is stuck under Faber.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
A head kick misses from Rivers.
Faber fails with a takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Urijah Faber. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Faber drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Faber misses the jab.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Stan Rivers showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! And we move into the final round!


Rivers lands with a hook. Faber tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
Faber tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Rivers swivels and escapes.
Faber misses with an uppercut.
Rivers has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.
Faber throws a leg kick that is checked
and Rivers counters with a good low kick that Faber was not able to check.
Faber throws a lazy uppercut
and Rivers connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Rivers is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Faber takes a swing at Rivers's ribcage but misses.

Rivers gets the takedown into side control.
Faber tries to improve position but can't.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Faber gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Faber gets back to full guard.
Faber is trying to keep Rivers in close.
Faber has a closed guard, preventing Rivers from standing up.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Faber throws his legs up looking for a submission but Rivers uses it to pass to side control.
Faber is trying to get back to half guard.
Faber is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Rivers's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Faber is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Rivers is thwarting Faber's attempts to control the position.
Urijah Faber has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Rivers prevents Faber from improving his position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Faber regains full guard. Nicely done.
Faber wants to sweep here but Rivers controlling him for the moment.
Rivers is fighting to break Faber's control of his arms but Faber is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Faber looking for a sweep. Not yet Faber, not yet.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Stan Rivers was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Faber throws an off balance right hand
and Rivers counters with a good low kick that Faber was not able to check.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Urijah Faber.
I think Rivers has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
