Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Chris Benoit!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Frank Sirpico!
The judges for this bout are Columbo Gatti, Joseph Jones and David Schapiro.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Benoit fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Benoit misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
A head kick by Benoit misses
and Sirpico counters by moving into the clinch.
Benoit's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Sirpico shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Benoit defends it nicely.
Benoit misses with a takedown attempt - Sirpico sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Chris Benoit. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Sirpico fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Sirpico misses with a head kick.
Sirpico pulls out of a head kick attempt.
A chopping leg kick lands by Benoit.
Benoit will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Sirpico uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Benoit.
That's one minute gone in the round.
Benoit fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Sirpico sprawls well initially but Benoit persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Benoit looks to land a strike but Sirpico avoids it nicely and regains full guard.
Benoit has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Sirpico is proving hard to escape from.
Benoit gets to his feet - Sirpico follows without any prompting.
Benoit tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Benoit darts in and clinches Sirpico up against the cage.
Benoit is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Sirpico is defending well for now.
Benoit looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Sirpico tries to pull guard but Benoit holds him up against the cage and eventually Sirpico drops back down to his feet.
Benoit is struggling to control the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round.
Sirpico wants to take the fight to the mat but Benoit manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Sirpico is trying to pull guard but Benoit turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Benoit breaks from the clinch.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Benoit feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Benoit controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Benoit has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Sirpico to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Benoit is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Sirpico pulls down on the head and he's put Benoit to sleep! This one is all over!
